So the Vols go from recruiting Clausen, who IMO was never coming to UT to signing Coleman out of McCallie.

And now for the 5* prima donna vs. 3* UT-boy at heart back-and-forth.

So you would take a three star QB over a five star QB. There are a number of other higher rated QB's than Coleman. I am just making an observation. I recall that Cutclifff went after the young Clausen extremely hard.

I would rather have a 3* player who puts the team first. Than a 5* showboat who has all of Notre Dame on their knees before him. He'll choke.

Why are we even discussing a kid who has already committed to another school? If you keep picking at a scab all it does is bleed.

I was just letting Patrick know that we are better off without him.

i am just trying to understnad some peoples mentality. Would they seriously sign three star players over five star players. Do they not think that Tennessee is going after the 4 and 5 star players. Believe me they are!!! They have not been able to sign them so they are moving down the list.

Then when they sign a 3 star player they talk them up in the media. What are they going to say, well this guy was our 4th or fifth choice.... no way. Lets get real here!!!!! Tennessee wants 4 and 5 star guys; how do you think the class was rated so high 2 years ago????? based upon three star players.......

This is one of the f ew exceptions where I'm glad we didn't sign a 5* kid.

Cutcliffe did say he invited over 200 QB's to watch footwork, arm strength, etc. They all performed individually in front of Cut. Cut said that out of all of them, Coleman was his man.

While I agree somewhat, I don't think coaches are nearly as caught up in "stars" as fans are.

That was a highly touted class, but look what they have produced. The * ratings are overrated.

It is going to be hard to sign a top rated QB this year anyway because we already have a starter in Ainge and top rated backup in Crompton. so if you can't get a 5 star then naturally you would take the the best player that you can get. It is better to pick up a three star than not sign anyone at all.

They sign players who they have seen first hand at their high school or at their camp. The staff is comfortable with Coleman.

You obviously put alot of stock in the stars. Maybe we should just wait until Rivals and Newburg put their star players out and then start recruiting 5 stars first, 4 stars next, and so on down the line. We could save alot of money in the recruiting budget by really focusing where we send our coaches. Heck, we could just shut down the Summer Camp. You know that Newburg and Rivals spend countless hours looking at film and seeing all the players across the country to be able to assign stars to each one of them and then rank them saying one is better than the other .... okee doke. :wink2:

So Cobb if Tennessee's recruiting classes for the next three years are not in top 25 would you be concerned.

Oh and did Forida and Texas and USC along with 20 other schools have better recruiting classes than the Vols last year? What makes their classes better than the Vols. Oh but I guess that does not matter.

Patrick, I think coaching is much more important than high school stars. We lost to Vanderbilt's "3rd team all-district" players last year.

The star power is insignificant if the kids aren't coached. So, why does it matter if we get a 5 star player vs a 3 star player?

I would rather have 5 star coaching, wouldn't you?

Remember Danny Wuerffel?

I don't know??

But I know David Cutcliffe.

McCallie quarterback B.J. Coleman committed Tuesday night to play his college football for the Tennessee Vols.

Coleman, a 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, threw for 2,203 yards, 19 touchdowns and only three interceptions during his junior season.

He becomes the Vols' eighth commitment, joining another local standout -- Baylor running back Kevin Cooper.

McCallie Sports Information Director Trey Tucker said the offer came from Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer on Tuesday night.

"It took him only about 30 minutes to decide after coach Fulmer's offer,'' Tucker said.

Tucker said Coleman has been in contact with Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe during camps on the Tennessee campus.

"He told B.J. that out of more than 200 quarterbacks he has evaluated, that he was the one Tennessee wanted,'' Tucker said. "B.J. is such a fine young man. He has handled all this recruiting with a lot of humility.''

After an early morning workout Wednesday morning at McCallie, Coleman said, "It was definitely a surprise and an honor when coach Fulmer called with the offer. It feels great. I'm pumped.''

Coleman said he has developed a close relationship to Cutcliffe.

"I love coach Cut,'' he said. "I've been going to the camps and I've developed more than a coach/athlete relationship. We have a real connection.''

Coleman, who grew up in Chattanooga, said he has never been a "die-hard'' Tennessee fan.

"I've really mainly been an SEC fan,'' he said. "I love the speed of the game.

"Now, I've got an opportunity to play for one of the best teams in the nation. Coach Cut will have a chance to mold me like he did the Mannings, Heath Shuler, Todd Helton and Andy Kelly.''

Coleman said he still has big plans for his senior season at McCallie.

"That's my big mission, my priority,'' he said. "Now, I can relax and focus on winning a state championship ring.''

So anything Cut says is Gospel. I remember when Cutcliff left the Vols, a very large percentage of Vol fans were more than happy to have Cut leave.

Dont get me wrong, I think Cut is a good Coach, however he was cut from the same mold as Johnny and Phil. Cut did a decent job at Ole Miss but ultimately for whatever reason he was not retained.

The reason we were around #25 in recruiting was a 5-6 record - plain and simple. Three more 5-6 seasons and we will probably have around #50 rated recruiting classes, but 5-6 will happen only one more time before something is done.

The schools you mentioned (Florida, TX, USC) did indeed have better recruiting classes but more importantly they had a better season on the field. That is why their classes were better.

Get the stars out of your eyes and hope our WR's can catch consistently, turnovers are kept to a minimum, special teams are not a negative, and the defense plays like it did last season.

I didn't say anything he says is Gospel. But I think he has a pretty good sense of what a good QB looks like.

I'm sure many of those Vol fans regret ever feeling that way. What did they say? "We finally won a National Championship with Cut, now it's time for him to leave so we can rely on Randy?"

As far as him not being retained at Ole Miss, that was Ole Miss's fault, not Cut's.

you did not answer the question..... I know they had better recruiting classes because they finished higher.......

BUT WHAT MAKES A CLASS BETTER THAN ANOTHER CLASS??? WHAT MAKES A NUMBER 1 CLASS VS A NUMBER 25 CLASS??????

COME ON YOU CAN DO IT YOU CAN SAY IT
