Sources: Mustain Withdraws Commitment

SPRINGDALE -- Sources confirmed Monday that Springdale quarterback Mitch Mustain withdrew his commitment to the University of Arkansas in a meeting with Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt during the day.

Mustain, Springdale coach Gus Malzahn and Mustain's mother, Beck Campbell, all declined comment Monday night.
Mustain, the Bulldogs' senior quarterback who was named the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year at a banquet on Monday, committed to Arkansas before a state television audience on Aug. 15 along with teammate and receiver Andrew Norman, who also committed to Arkansas.
The announcement came after a whirlwind of recruiting during the spring and summer for several Springdale players, five of whomcommitted to Division-I colleges during the summer. Those players included offensive lineman Bartley Webb (Notre Dame), receivers Damian Williams and Ben Cleveland (Florida) and both Norman and Mustain, who were the last to make their commitments public.
At the announcement on Aug. 15, Mustain said he chose Arkansas over Notre Dame and that the commitment was a relief after the hectic spring and summer.
In his two years as a starter for the Bulldogs, Mustain is 329 of 492 passing for 5,981 yards and 67 touchdowns. He set the state's Class AAAAA single-season record for yards passing (3,817) this season while leading the Bulldogs to the state championship on Saturday in a 54-20 win over West Memphis in War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock in front of a record crown of 25,386.

I wonder if that's a signal that the TN coaching staff has very little confidence in Ainge. Mustain has some wheels and obviously has an arm, but he's a little short. I think he is very comparable to Crompton. I'm wondering if it's really TN making all this noise. Maybe Spurrier is the one causing him to re-think his commitment to Ark, although I would like to think it was TN.

Think about when Cut left the last time - he had a ton of QB talent before he went and that may be what he is doing here - not that he doesn't have confidence in EA or JC - jus that it can't hurt to have enough quality QB's fighting for playing time.

Well if Mustain does decide to come to TN, I will be impressed. It would show that he has alot of confidence in his ability and is not afraid of the competition.

I saw Mustain play Jenks High out of OK earlier this year on ESPNU. I was very impressed with what I saw. I think he could really come in and contend for a chance to start next year.

I think it's that Cut knows he can't have enough talent in that position. At Ole Miss, if Eli went down, his whole plan would have tanked. And we've seen how prone our guys have been to injury. Perhaps it's nore a statement against the confidence in our O Line protecting them than it is the QBs themselves. How many QB injuries have we seen in the past few years? I'd personally like to think that if we were undefeated mid-season and our starting QB went down that we'd be safe the rest of the season with capable hands filling in.

Ainge has been a bust as far as recruiting goes......I know he didn't get consistant playing time but that's no excuse for the numbers he had this season....even Casey Clausen played better than Ainge did this year. :banghead: :banghead:

This is certainly interesting. My money is on him wanting to be coached by Cut..

When DC left, we had Tee Martin. I wouldn;t call one good qb a ton of talent. Now, if you meant that while he was in Knoxville, yes, he had a good amount of talent.

yeah but then what are we going to do with another qb? EA, JC, and this guy, who would get to play? a really good qb will be riding the bench for a while, i just cant see that happening.

You get what I meant- when he was here before he stock piled QBS - looks like he is trying the same thing again.

Wisconsin is completely up in the air. Why go there? And Auburn? With the guy they got, I don't see Tubby wanting him. It'll be interesting to see if Urban takes him.

Wisconsin needs a QB immediately. I still don't see him back in the SEC- no where to go - well he might can go to Arkansas :D

I can agree with many of you that he has talent. I don’t see him as a strong passer. So duel treat is a stretch in my opinion. One thing is for sure he spent more time partying at UT than in Football prep so why would anyone think he is any different now? Florida has their guy and look to see CL bail out for the NFL this year.

If we lose out on Mustain and get no other power player, then we suffer at depth in this position for a while. UGA has the second coming of Christ, or so they alledge, in Stafford. These guys go to other schools and Tebow goes to UF then we've been left out of the mix with talent at this position.

But on the flipside, these big boys might come with big heads and be the biggest flop out there. Leak was supposed to be in the ranks of the Heisman right now and he can't even figure out Meyer's system.
