Now that the season is over, I am wondering about something. We start the season with two true freshmen quarterbacks. One seems like he can throw, scramble, and even take a hit; the other doesn't. Ainge, it seems, is only good on passes within five yards; anything beyond that is either going to the other team or nowhere near anyone. There were exceptions, I know. But we kept starting him and giving him more play than the other guy that appeared to actually be able to make things happen. Then, I guess I solidified my opinion of him when Shaeffer takes a hard lick and still gives something. Ainge falls on the ball and is out for the season. Did anyone even touch him, I can't remember? I sure remember the hit Shaeffer took! But, with all that said, after Clausen rallied in the end of the season, is there any doubt who should start?

You have discredited your entire post with the comment about Ainge only throwing within 5 yards. With the exception of one bad game against Auburn, Ainge showed poise in the pocket able to hit his 2nd and 3rd receiver. Ainge was one of the best freshman quarterbacks in the nation.

I'll give my congrats to Clausen, however, he did throw the interception that lost the game against ND. 2 of his 3 wins were against Kentucky and Vanderbilt.

Your open ended question of is there any doubt who should start is misleading. Who do YOU think should start?

What team were you watching this year? Do you forget all the deep throws to Bret Smith and "downtown" Tony Brown? Most of the passing plays are safe curl routes but thats because are WR's are so talented and make big plays out of nothing. No doubt our passing game is simple but it gets the job done. Don't forget they are freshman.

Ainge didn't take many hits because he got the ball away before the hit. Shaeffer took far too many hits, his speed should prevented most of them.

Geez we didn't lose the ND game strictly on that int. There were many other factors that could have helped us win that game and or lose that game.

Hmmmmmm. I smell a rat.

Trying to convince the Nation to pull for Clausen to start? Methinks we have an LSU fan who's scared sh**less about the whipping he's gonna take next year when the two-headed Big Orange monster visits Cajun country.

No, wait. . . . (sniff, sniff). . . .that's no rat! That's the stench of body odor, Stetson cologne, and tooth decay! WE'VE GOT A BAMMER IN THE HOUSE!!!

BHV,
I don't think the points alone from the INT is what cost us the game. We just lost two qb's and in my opinion the mental aspect of the INT is what did it.

Clausen would never have been in that position had the coaches not tried to throw a 60+ yard hail mary with Ainge.

anyway, I digress......

Not to discredit Rick but.....He came into the A&M gamehaving thrown just as many picks as touchdowns. Ainge definitely is the deep threat out of the three. Rick is a playmaker but has nowhere near the talent in arm strength as EA. If EA is not the starter next year with Schaeffer and Rick competing for second, I will be pissed.

i dont disagree that schaffer can make things happen but he also turns the ball over A LOT, gets sacked A LOT and still makes A LOT of bad passes.

why are people so hard on ainge? i've seen him make some incredible passes OVER 5 YARDS. i know he has a bunch of INTs but he has more TDs and he has less sacks than schaffer.

not sure what you want ainge to do but in my mind, as a freshman, he is doing fine.

BRING ON 05!! AND CAL IN 06!!!

Ainge has shown lots of poise as a freshman and has a rifle of an arm, but Clausen showed lots of poise against Vandy and Kentucky when our Defense left them in the game until the end and he looked damn good to me against A&M, should he be the starter next yr? I think he deserves a legitimate shot but if Ainge or Shaffer progress next spring as fast as they did this spring then one of them deserves it as well ( I wouldn't mind seeing the rotation again, it worked pretty well this yr) As much talent at WR and RB as we will have any of the 3 can be successful and our dfense that is coming back should take even more pressure off as well.

Huh?? I saw Ainge make some great passes this year. Ainge completed many passes over 5 yards. He didn't even throw that many short to my dismay as our RB's were sometimes in the flat with nobody around them. Ainge never scrambled much, but he also hardly ever got sacked.

In the Florida game, does the 4th down and a mile that Ainge connected with Hannon on to get us in field goal range ring a bell to you man? Saying Ainge cannot hit the deep ball is crazy because he proved time and time again this year that he can

Shaffer isn't the best QB we got, Ainge is, but Rick Clausen is pretty good...Shaffer needs to move to Wide Receiver or something because he's too good not to be on the field..Shaffer can make things happen but when he goes in everyone in that stadium knows what's gonna happen

Ainge should start because he started this year and showed what he could do....In my mind there is no question who should start and that is Erik Ainge but it will be interesting to see....If what Sanders says is true then it may be a different story
