Question about scoring a baseball game

Fielder chooses to go after lead runner instead of going to first, does not get the force out, runner safe at first and no outs recorded still scored as a fielder's choice (FC) and a at bat (AB) but not as a hit, so batting average (BA) drops. If there's a run scored, the batter gets the rbi.

Why? What is an example scenario where you would score a play as a “fielder’s choice safe?”
A scenario could be there is a runner on first, the batter hits a ground ball to the infield and instead of throwing to first for the out, they toss to 2nd to get the lead runner. Batter to first is safe. The “fielder’s choice” to throw to 2nd and not 1st. It counts as an at bat for the batter but not a hit.

So even if everyone is safe, and there’s no fielding error, the batter’s batting average still drops?

Thanks! What if there’s a fielding error? Is it scored as a fielder’s choice safe or something else?
you're recording how the advancing runner or runners made it to that base, if lead runner makes the base safely on a FC then it is recorded as FC , if he reaches on an error then it is recorded as an E then the batter is the only one recorded as on base by FC. In scorekeeping it is just FC

If the ab counts (there wasn't a walk, hbp, or sacrifice, then the average either increases because of a hit (a 1 for 1 event) or it will go down if the scorer seems you didn't EARN a hit (an 0 for 1 event.)

Example: you ground to second. Duh, you're out by a mile at first. 0 for 1. Instead, the 2B throws home to cut down the runner from third, who slides in under the tag safely.

Fielder's choice safe.

You didn't earn a hit. Your average goes down.

Others have explained correctly, just expounding.

It is because the person that fielded the ball chose to go after another out. If the play was made by the shortstop and it is evident he could have gotten the batter out by throwing to first, it will be ruled a fielders choice regardless of what else happens.
