Question about the "U"

I think "hat" may be able to provide some information on this since he seems to know quite a bit about Miami. Was Miami formerly called the "Purple Hrrricanes" before they became a national football power? I seem to remember hearing them called that back in the 50's and early 60's. I can barely recall seeing newsreel sports highlight clips of them on black and white TV. If this is true, did they once wear purple and have changed school colors? I know this is not very important but one day might make a good trivia question.

The Miami media guide states that orange, green, and white have been the school colors since 1926. I'll ask some of the old timers that sit around me at the OB about this question when I go to the BC game Thanksgiving night.
