After a two point safety, the team that suffered the safety has the option of kicking from the tee or punting. Can that team kick an onside kick and recover? My guess is not since Oregon State didn't.

It's a free kick just like a regular kickoff. The ball is live as soon as it's kicked and can be fielded or recovered by anyone after it goes 10 yards.

GaVol, why did Oregon St., trailing by nine with four minutes to go, not try an onside kick. That would have been their only shot at a win.

I didn't see it, but I would guess that it's because the risk is so high due to kicking from the 20 yard line.

I've never seen an onside kick after a safety . . . but I have seen a short directional punt to an open area where the kicking team runs down and recovers the ball about 30 yards downfield.
