I'm going to go out on a limb and say it isn't because he was the most studious student...

I believe he probably failed some grades before the 8th grade...and maybe in Florida they do not have a program to help him get put into the correct grade when he did fall behind

He chose a career path early in life. He'll lose more money than I'll ever make. Calculus is for losers.

Kid was in and out of foster homes until HS. Not hard to imagine school not being a priority for him or many foster families growing up.

Maybe this doesn't apply to this situation due to the foster kid situation, but there is a real effort by parents to hold their kids back so they physically mature and can do better in sports. ESPN did an Outside the Lines about the "red shirting" going on with middle and high school kids, look it up.

Failing school in Florida is hard. Its all about numbers here. No Child Left Behind on steroids. They do what it takes to make the metrics look good no matter the impact on the childs actual education.

This kid probably just didn't go to school for a few years.
