My brother works form the Army Corps. of Engineers in Nashville and received his 'Notice of Furlough' today. I got this from an e-mail so haven't had the opportunity to ask him direct questions. My question to those on this board that recieve ferderal compensation for service is this: with a gov't shutdown, do VA benefits/entitlements cease? I'm sure those in combat zones receive some compensation but what about stateside service men and women? Any info. would be appreciated.

From what I've heard, mid-month paychecks will only have one week of pay on them. That is all I really know, though.

yep... I'm supposed to get paid just through the 8th. After that I'm not getting paid, but I will still have all my benefits. As for pay, I'll get backpay for however much I miss.

They've been preaching the punishments we could get for choosing not to work or if we somehow tried to find our way home. I understand those not deployed are getting the same treatment. They'll still work, but we are only "earning money" as one website put it, we won't be receiving pay until the government starts back up.

As far as I know (I'm out, but this is word from friends) untaxed (benefits, BAS, BAH, etc) pay is going to be divvied out. Only salary is going to be halved.

Though, most Federal Credit Unions (I know NFCU is doing this) will offer zero interest loans as a stop-gap. USAA is rumored to also be mulling this over. They don't want their members to default on mortgages unlike some other unscrupulous banks.
