I've been looking for an alternative internet source. However, due to the fact that I live in a rural area where the only internet available is dial-up, I don't have many options. I've looked into home Wi-Fi but don't really understand how it works or if it would work for me. It seems all I need is a router and a wireless network compatible PC and I'm ready to go, which seems too easy. How does Wi-Fi work and would Wi-Fi work in a rural area? Thanks for any help.

The missing link is that you need to have your router connected to your internet source. For example, from the cable/phone jack to the router. At thatpoint you can move wirelessly about with your wi-fi enabled laptop, cell phone, etc.

So, I'm guessing if I plugged the dial-up phone line into the router, it wouldn't make the internet any faster. Right? That's what I'm looking for, faster speed.

Correct. The router only distributes the signal you have coming in.

I remember the days of my DirecPC. Slow as hell up through the dial-up, and pretty fast 1.0MB down. Got it right when Napster came online.
I used Starband a few years ago and it worked well.

Any chance you have decent cell coverage? A mifi or overdrive would give you faster speeds than dialup.

how much extra do you pay on top of your cell bill to have that?

My phone isn't with Verizon but I pay around $60 for the mifi. I was paying the same price for a USB card for my laptop and the mifi is much more flexible.
