Suffice to say that very few people have clue as to the true identity of what our offense will look like over the course of the next two seasons. CDD seemed to play to the offensive strengths, per the Ruston media, and Cheney's offense at Purdue, IIRC, wasn't "exactly" a pro-style offense. Those, and a number of other factors like questions at OL, LB, DB, et al make this the most enticing Spring Practice in recent memory.

I'll be honest, the only attention I ever paid to Purdue while CJC was there were the highlights on Sportscenter & College Gameday but from what I gathered, CJC likes to throw the ball...and the only nod I gave La Tech was when they kept LSU in check at Death Valley last year.

So I have questions.

1. Will the offense be Pro-Style, West-Coast, Balanced, a Hybrid of multiple O's, or will we just adjust to what works and go from there?

2. Is NS the starter, come fall? If not, who is??

3. Who is the QB heir apparent for '11, Bray, Simms, Nance, ____? (Yes, I left Lamaison out on purpose)

4. How many of the three QB's will still be here after this season? (i.e. is Nance CJC's guy?)

5. CDD & CJC are both offensive minded coaches...(DD was a WR...) does this mean we'll have a more aggressive game plan?

Sorry to ramble on, its a slow day...Just some thoughts I've had since the hiring.

Discuss.

1. More pro-style but i would expect to see some "trickery" thrown in(see the LaTech LSU game last year)
2. Stephens or Simms IMO.
3. Bray or Nance, If Simms doesn't start this year he won't next year either.
4. Hopefully each but if Nance jumps Bray i wouldn't be surprised if he left.
5. god i hope so :)

I was getting the feeling that we would be a smash-mouth, run-first offense. I hope we try to do that, but I hope we have plenty of flexibility, and use our wr's and te's.

Its somewhat interesting that we have offered a few dual threat qbs

I was wondering if they would keep Lamaison on scholarship this year and next. Seems like he had 3 years of eligibility left when he got here last summer because he grayshirted one year in JC. Seems like a wasted scholly if he won't see the field for 2 more years, unless he's going to be the scout team and/or emergency QB (warm body) if someone gets hurt if we redshirt Bray and/or Nance. I've never heard one person on this site say he'll ever see the field unless the very worst case senario happens.

there are already rumors that NL is a one and done. After the upcoming season he will move on for playing time. Im willing bet Furman.

Hard to say on #1. You have a lot of influences on that staff. Chaney ran some sort of west coast O but with some spread elements at Purdue IIRC. I think La Tech looked pretty standard pro-style, right? Baggett definitely brings pro-style experience with him as does Hiestand (w/ a specialty in zone blocking IIRC).

I strongly suspect it will be something similar to last year... but who really knows?

Anyone else besides me and Rex read 'X' 's blog from the edge?

Nick Stephens, the heir apparent to the quarterback spot, will be gone after this season and it is possible that somewhere between March 18 and December 1st UT could lose another quarterback, in addition to Nick Stephens, for whatever reason...maybe lack of opportunity, not a fit with the new scheme, or just looking for greener pastures... Coach Chaney might be looking for his own type of quarterback and that may not necessarily be a pro style type.

My guess off the hip, being as the HC is 1st year as well as a hodge-podge of coaches with various expierience levels all of them new to the players...is that they'll scrimmage like crazy early and DD will decided from what he sees on film what players bring what talents to the table and decide on an offense that fits best to the players he has on hand. I expect it to be extremely run heavy and basic, if I were a D coordinator thats what I'd set up to defend UT if my team faced 'em game 1.

That's the reason I think this year will be a continuation of last year Dan. If they don't change the system then there won't be as much to learn. It can still be tweaked to the talents of the current players and evolved into something different as they get their players in. If UT gets good OL play, I would look for the O to actually be a little more advanced than last year.

1. From everything I've searched on Chaney at Purdue is about how he loved to throw the ball in a spread formation. Meyer actually went to Chaney and a couple of other "spread" coaches while at one of his schools to get an idea on how the spread worked and to put it all together. So I personally think it will be a mixture of both Pro Style and Spread. I don't see us being a straight up Pro Style team under Chaney, but then again you have to have the athletes for it so I think CDD and CJC will work with what they got.
2. Simms
3. Simms
4. All with the exception of Stephens of course and possibly Lamaison.
5. I honestly think we will be more aggressive in offense especially with Chaney calling the plays.

I read it all the time and, honestly, that's what got me really thinking about this yesterday. "X" always has some insightful info, and Basillio's not bad either.

Also, FTR, I'm sure CDD will manage the offense, but the ultimate decision maker will be Chaney. That is what leads me to believe CJC's offense will be a hybrid of multiple sets but lean more Pro-Style. It may evolve over the years as they get "their" players in but I think for at least the first season, possibly more, CJC & CDD will begin with what works and go from there.

BTW, "X" mentioned a few QB's to keep an eye out for the '11 class and specifically mentioned CJC's interest in them. That is what leads me to believe that Bray could be odd man out since Nance was so heavily recruited by him.

I honestly hope it's not Bray. Even though his 40 time is not impressive the kid does have a tremendous upside and his release and accuracy reminds me so much of Manning. I do want the best players for our offense and the coaches know what's best but I hope it's Lamaison instead of Bray. Plus his whole family packed up and moved here.

Coach Dooley said today that it was almost certain that the starting QB would not be determined during spring practice, and that all of them would have lots of reps.

1. The offense will fit the personnel. There isn't going to be a "look" right now, so trying to figure that part out is futile right now.

2. I think Stephens has a as good of a shot to be the starter as anyone on the team, but I don't think it will be handed to him.

3. Trying to figure out '11 right now isn't something that anyone should be trying to do. That being said, if it's not Bray, I would be surprised.

4. I believe that all 3 will be, because I don't believe we go after someone that can come in as a freshman and play. You have to have at least 3 QBs in Spring and Fall practice.

5. Game plan is going to be dictated by personnel and the opponent. Trying to say it's going to be one way or another isn't something people should even try to guess at this point.
