Why did texas get it?

we are older than them in both football and state-ship?

Can anyone tell me when they got the rights?

What brought it up to the dispute about it?

And last but not least why did they win it?

btw can someone tell me how to make a poll. i'd like to see who's in favor of the power T or the UT.

GO VOLS! VB

I don't know but I HATE texas. No way they should have dibbs on ANYTHING dealing with UT.

Edit: Reasoning isn't just pure hate...its the fact that we are older and the original UT. Pretty sure we have more NC's too.

Looks like they've going for a Power T as well.

Tennessee retained the rights to use it east of the Miss. River, but I seem to recall them making a marketing decision to be consistent and just use the power T everywhere.

February 14, 1986, Friday, BC cycle

The University of Texas has reached a settlement with the University of Tennessee over the use of the ''UT'' trademark on such items as T-shirts, beer mugs, key chains and customized toilet seats.

Texas said a possible court dispute loomed because Tennessee had applied to the federal government for the right to use the trademark on a number of items not covered under Texas' trademark rights.

Under the agreement between the two schools, Tennessee gets to use the trademark east of the Mississippi River and in Louisiana's West Baton Rouge Parish, home of Southeastern Conference member Louisiana State University.

Texas will own the trademark everywhere else west of the Mississippi.

In addition, the agreement gives the Longhorns and Volunteers limited rights to use the popular interlocking UT logo design in each other's territory during bowl games or other special events.

A staff recommendations to the Texas Board of Regents said the solution was not ideal, but ''it does avoid a costly and protracted administrative and court proceeding.''

On the field, Tennessee switched from the interlocking UT to the Power T starting with the 1998 season.

I'm usually all for tradition, but in this case I prefer the Power T.

Love the "Power T for Tennessee" that the Pride forms every pregame

you'd think those egomaniacs would be a bit more grateful towards us... after all, without us they'd be doing legal battles with Minnesota for the Power M.

With the settlement in mind, both schools moved away from the logo. Tennessee uses the Power T as their primary logo for merchandising, while Texas uses the Longhorn logo.

the most common answer I've heard is that the NCAA doesnt want schools using logos that are used by other schools in the same sport...so to settle conflicts between schools competing for use (i.e. Kansas and Kentucky for the UK, SoCal and SoCarolina for the USC, Tex and Tenn for the T, ect.) it depends when each school officially began competition in each sport. Kentucky had an all around athletic department before Kansas and therefore would get choice to use the UK leaving Kansas with use of the KU, same with SoCal athletics coming before SoCarolina.

....back to Tenn and Texas, Tennessee began competition in football before Texas (Tennessee fielded its first permanent team in 1891 and Texas in 1893) and later had choice of whether their primary logo would be the T or UT, Texas began competition in baseball officially 3 years before Tennessee in 1894 thus being older had the choice to use the T in baseball as their official logo which is why our baseball team traditionally uses the interlocking UT logo.

I actually liked the UT at the 50 better than I like the "Power T." Don't get me wrong, I like the Power T, I just like the interlocking UT better. I also despise Texas(and most Texasns). We are the real UT....sorry fellas

Damn right! If it weren't for the brave men of the great state of Tennessee, Texas would be a part of Mexico. Hell, we got our mascot name from saving their ass in the Spanish American war. If you're a Texan, don't give me that 'Real UT' sh!t, it's insulting. Just say thank you and go about your day.
