i didn't get to hear or watch the game last night, but kept up with the score on ESPNNEWS....looks like we kept it close until about 4 minutes or so to go, and then got down by 7 and couldn't come back...which sounds about right after reading the game thread....

Overall it sounds like we didn't play too horrible, but more or less, the things that we all knew would lose us a few games this year came to fruition...no depth to run with a top 4 team at thier place....

All in all, i think the effort and the fact that it wasn't a blow out is still pretty good....and i can't see where that loss will hurt us when tourney time comes....TN schedule thus far has been respectable, considering the road games we've played. And let's not forget this Memphis team is pretty darn good...they should've beaten Duke....

in an unrelated topic, how many former Vols are playing in Champ games this weekend?

Ced Wilson for the STeelers
Al Wilson for the Broncos
Those are the two most prominent ones i can think of? any others that you all know about?

I don't think the Panthers have any Vols on the roster, and i have no idea about the Hawks....

Other than that, prett slow sports day....

We didn't get any production off of the bench last night. Patterson was the only player who came in and scored and he only had 6 points I think.?. We played them close for most of the game and probably should have won despite Memphis being the better team.

Maybe we can make a few more shots at home against Florida.

yeah, but wasn't bench production one of the BIG sore spots going in to this year? it was bound to catch up to us at somepoint, especially against a very good team like MPS right?

Yeah, there's not denying that. Here's the thing, the Memphis bench didn't score much either. We get our regular bench play or just a little below average and we win.

They played hard though, you can't say they didn't want it. We had a chance on the road against a solid team. Our wins will come.

As Coach Pearl said in his post-game clip at UT Sports, the bench production was a factor. CBP is doing a great job with the guys that he has.

We need depth and another big guy. That was a great game to watch--pretty physical. We're sorta fightin the giants with what we have. Have to love the "run and gun offense" CBP has setup to make up for the lack of depth and size.

hopefully at home vs the gators, ut will stay out of foul trouble and get some fouls called on someone other than ut players(ahem...to last night's game). i guess you could say the home team gets better calls, i really hope that happens saturday because it sure happened last night

A great effort by an obviously inferior team last night. Like Mike Griffith said this morning: Memphis is almost like watching an NBA team (talent-wise). The mere fact that we were competitive, and even UP at the half, speaks volumes for Coach Pearl and the "110%" attitude of the Vols.

We sufferred, as always in a UT loss, from poor shooting, an inability to succeed on the offensive glass, and a lack of size. How many times in the past two games have we gotten to the rim and then had a little gimmee blocked?

Really, a win for both teams. Memphis got the "W" and showed it could come back and play hard after being down to a team that really wanted to win. Tennessee earned another bit of respect from the national media and our cross-state rival. Don't think for a second that Calipari isn't scared to think of how tough we'll be in another 2 years. He may even be updating his resume. . . .just in case.

Good points, except for the idea Cal is scared of UT's fortunes rising. Knowing the guy personally, I can tell you that an improved UT actually helps Cal. Given the lack of depth and marquee teams in the remnants of C-USA, a strong UT program gives him one more attractive game to market to TV. Cal is going to recruit nationwide, his roster this year is an example of that. He also knows that Memphis will always get its share of the elite local talent. UT's acsendence probably scares Arkansas, Mississippi State, and UAB a lot more than it does Memphis. Cal may leave Memphis, but it would be to get into the Big East or ACC, not because he fears Tennessee.

That's not exactly where I was going with my comments. I have heard that there is a little discontent with some of his coaching, at times, and wonder if maybe he isn't getting "less" than he should out of his players. With talent like that, no matter how hard Tennessee played, he ought to be winning last night's contest by about 30. There were some plays where I actually had to rewind the DVR and watch Memphis again. . . .thinking "Wow." We are fun to watch, but Memphis and LSU have both really showed flashes of brilliance. To be honest, I'm a little worried that Saturday will be same song, different verse.

It's OK, though. We don't need any of these 3 games. ONE would have been nice, but our schedule improves drastically after this weekend.

GO VOLS.

In defense of Cal, that team is painfully young. Consistency tends to follow maturity.

espeically in bball...how many times do you hear and see where teams with junior and senior leadership do well...UNC last year was a good example....when Matt Doughtery recruited all those kids, and they came in as Freshmen, they were not very good at all...two years later....well, you see the difference....young good talent will keep you in games, mature good talent will win you games.....if they stick around long enough....UNC another good example of that this year....

The problem for Memphis is that they are almost certain to lose Shawne Williams to the NBA after this year. He has been even more impressive than Marvin Williams was for UNC last year, so you have to figure he's on track to be a lottery pick.

yep...that's got to drive NCAA bball coaches nuts...spend all that time recruiting a kid, get him there, and he's there for maybe two years max....it's no wonder the dyansty type teams no longer exist....every year is up, down, up down, depending on graduation or early exit....or even if they decide to go to college.

the only thing it has done is made cbball a more even playing feild, but in the process, the quailty of atheletes in the NCAA i think has dropped off a bit....

How cool would it have been if you had gotten a chance to see the likes of Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett in college? or if C. Anthony had stayed more than one year or Marvin Williams for that matter...you think UNC might be a bit better this season??

Oh well, i hope this kind of thing never happens to CFB...it's bad enogh that some leave after their Junior year, but still better than the one and done you get with Bball....

Memphis is exhibit 1 for the phenomenon you're talking about. Amare Stoudamire, Quentyl Woods, and Kendrick Perkins never enrolled and Dajuan Wagner only stayed a year.

It's depth and endurance that is really killing us. We hang in all down the line until the very end and give out of gas. Even switching out does little to help. We're definitely getting every bit out of what we have. Hopefully by next season we'll be up on depth and endurance and be able to not just hang in there but overcome.
