Glad it wasn't a big Diamondback or other venomous snake.

That maternal instinct is pretty strong in lots of animals. My favorite is actually where a big male grizzly (who have no issues about being cannibalistic) comes upon a mother grizz with cubs. If he really wanted to make a point of it he could have taken the mother...problem was she was all in, even if it meant dying. So then it becomes "is winning worth the reward" and the boar decided against the idea.
