Cohen meets with black ministers group over his support of hate crimes bill : Local News : Commercial Appeal

More than 100 ministers and guests showed up Tuesday for the weekly meeting of the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association, where Cohen had been invited to speak. During a volatile question-and-answer forum that followed, many loudly commented that Cohen, who is white, can't adequately represent the primarily black Ninth District.

"He's not black and he can't represent me, that's just the bottom line," said Rev. Robert Poindexter of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. "I don't care how people try to dress is up, it always comes down to race and he can't know what it's like to be black."

And he's Jewish too. Imagine that. I wonder if these same preachers had issues with Jews from up north coming down and dying to defend their rights during the Civil Rights era.

A word to the wise....go to the video store and pick you up a copy of Mississippi Burning and tell me if a guy of his background cannot represent you.

BS. I don't see how having black groups these days is any different than white groups. Saying that a white guy is different than a black guy is saying that a black guy is different than a white guy. That's a weird sentence, but what I'm saying is that if a white guy can't lead blacks, then why should blacks lead whites??

It's all ridiculous. It's either equal or not. You can't have equality on your own terms.

Can someone please explain to me how Black Entertainment Television is not racist and yet if a White Entertainment Television channel was created, there would be an uproar from Jesse Jackson and his gang and the creators would be labeled as racist pigs.

There is no explanation except to say it's a politically correct double standard. There are as many black Archie Bunkers as there are white, always have been....always will be.

The reason a White Entertainment Television does not exist is because historically every other channel has been White Entertainment Television.

We have a Miss Black America but no Miss White America. And then we have a black Miss America.
We have the United Negro College Fund but no United White Boy College Fund.
Black Comedians get on stage and make fun of white people calling them names, and then Kramer gets on stage. There's all sorts of double standards. I have no racial quams but I can't stand the blatant double standard. Affirmative action? Is that a joke?

Have you watched prime-time TV?

White history month is January and March-December.

That's a cop out. There are many races on all TV channels, except BET. Now, the percentages may be a little more comparable to actual population percentages, but that's not always the case.

Sorry I did not see previous posts about the same thing  But the matter of it is, if you say anything like that you are automatically deemed a racist. If they want everything to be "equal" and "fair" but yet single out these races, How can they not expect some people to be racist?

I'm sure your remote control is pretty close to mine and allows you to change the channel. Why are you complaining about a channel very few people watch? Go ahead and start your White Entertainment TV and see how your ratings are. Why are you not all over the Spanish language channels too? Don't they only show Latinos? :eek:hmy: Why the hate for BET and not Telemundo?

I promise that I saw Justin Timberlake, Eminem, and Bubba Sparxx on BET yesterday!!

Seriously, if you want to debate whether what's going on in Memphis is right, go right ahead. I think that it is sad that many people on both sides of the ledger are so closed minded.

But for you guys to even debate why there is a BET, or a Miss Black America, or a UNCF, or even Affirmative Action, you obviously failed AP US History. Wasn't that long ago that black folks couldn't even wizz in the same bathroom or eat in the same establishment as white folks. Most of our parents lived in that world, so it wasn't that long ago.

The difference is blacks are in a minority. The fact you have a problem with it just shows we still have too many redneck tendencies/beliefs in this world today.

Why would you even care??? Enough said

The problem with you creating differences is it is completely against probably what you are truly for which is not seeing people as different based on skin color. Black people can have BET or Miss Black America if they want, it is a free country, have at it. That does not mean people have to think it is a good idea. I would not be for an all white network any more than I am for an all black network. I would prefer someone not create an idea based on a person's color. The fact someone has a problem with it does mean the person has "redneck beliefs".

Hey, I am not concerned with BET. I am not creating differences either. Blacks are a minority which is the reason why so few watch the channel.

Are you agreeing with me on the redneck beliefs thing? It sounds like you are. Anytime I hear someone say "Why isn't there a white network station", I cringe....

I understand what you are saying about the cringe. It is a knee jerk "why does someone have something I don't have" reaction but I don't necessarily think it makes someone a redneck or a racist. Maybe just jealous.
