Not only does Ralph Weekly foresee the feisty rookie maturing into a starter in the field and a more dangerous batter as her career wears on, but he also believes she could move back to a position she dominated in high school -- pitcher.

"We are looking at her throwing some innings next year, she has a good drop ball," Weekly said. "Then the following year, if everything goes alright, she might become a full-time starter."

Shelton: Gaffin might be moving back in pitching ring with Tennessee softball - Boulder Daily Camera

Looks like Gabriel, Tarango & Gaffin will comprise our pitching staff in 2015.

striking out 124 batters and finishing the year with a 1.74 earned-run average

impressive numbers for sure,no wonder they weren't worried about picking up a pitcher this year

Gaffin put up good pitching numbers in high school, but they pale in comparison to those of top SEC pitchers. Just to put them in perspective, here are the senior HS numbers for our pitching staff this year:

Ivy Renfroe: 23-0, 0.21 ERA, 281 strikeouts in 139 innings

Ellen Renfroe: 40-2, 0.15 ERA, 545 strikeouts and 14 walks in 271 innings

Erin Gabriel:
16-2, 0.53 ERA, 232 strikeouts in 124.2 innings

Cheyanne Tarango:
23-8, 2.44 ERA, 214 strikeouts and 98 walks in 198 innings, 0.185 opponent batting average

And Gaffin's numbers: 22-2, 1.74 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 39 walks in 104 innings, 0.189 opponent batting average

I'm afraid that our looking at Gaffin as a potential starter in '15 has more to do with our dearth of pitchers than it does with her pitching talent. But she's a fantastic athlete with a stellar work ethic, so hopefully she'll excel in that role when given the opportunity.

You can't really compare ERA's like that even though the Renfro sisters were outstanding. You have to look at the level of competition they played against and what kind of coaching they had too. From what I've seen of Tarango she has the potential to be an outstanding pitcher.

I would take Gaffin's numbers over Tarango any day.

Tarango likely faced much stronger competition though.

California HS softball >> Colorado HS softball, generally.

But softball players are usually discovered through their summer travel teams anyway, so I'm sure the Weeklys have seen Gaffin pitch against top notch competition at some point.

i believe Gaffin will do what they need her to do,Renfore and Gabriel should be the starters with Tarango as the 3rd pitcher, looks like a pretty good pitching line up to me,for what that is worth :)

The bad news is Alabama has its top 2 coming back - I havent checked the other schools yet. Anyone have news on Gabriels rehab ? Someone posted it was the same injury A Rod has (torn hip labrum) -- look how long he has been out - thats got to be a big worry, if its true.
