After waiting more than two months for an answer, Tennessee point guard signee Ramar Smith got the one he wanted today.
Smith was informed by the testing agency that his SAT score had been validated, meaning he will be eligible to play for the Vols this season.
Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl said Smith plans to drive through the night from his home in Detroit and be in Knoxville on Thursday. Smith was running out of time, as the last day for late registration at UT this semester is Friday.
As recently as Monday, Pearl sounded pessimistic about the Smith being ruled eligible this season. The holdup was his test score, which he took in June and received the results back from later that month.
Ive always been extremely positive throughout the summer, Pearl said. When it got to the last week, I began to prepare myself for the worst. But it was meant to be for a reason.
Smith is one of the highest rated signees in Tennessee basketball history. His signing in April completed what some analysts said was a Top-5 recruiting class for the Vols.
He comes in as one of the favorites to win the starting point guard job this season.
