I hope JJJ is ok. We can’t afford to lose any of our regular rotation, especially someone who might be to able score. Tonight he didn‘t, but he definitely saved us against Auburn.
I know this has been mentioned by others, but Phillips has to slam that one with a two point lead. That probably should have been mentioned in the timeout before the inbounds pass. That one play is a good metaphor for his overall play this year; you can see the potential for explosive plays, but something is holding him back.
I don’t understand how referees are calling fouls these days. Apparently anything is allowed in the paint except for elbows and fists, over-the-back isn’t a thing anymore, and the block-charge rule is not really based on any objective criteria other than a defensive player falling down equals a charge. Except when it doesn’t. And grazing a shooter’s pinky after he has released the shot is about the worst thing you can do. Except when you‘re around the rim, because then the elbow and fist rules apply. Makes total sense.
This flight has hit some serious turbulence, and we’re headed for more rough air. The Vandy game was one of the most winnable games left on the schedule. We still have @kentucky, @A&M, @Auburn, home for Arkansas, Mizzou, Alabama, and South Carolina. Out of those 7 teams, only the Gamecocks are below .500 in SEC play. So far we are 1-2 against conference teams that are above .500. This could get ugly.
I like Vescovi, but he is very limited offensively. He needs room to get his 3 point shot off, as it’s more of a set shot, so taller guards bother him. He doesn‘t often get to the rim, as he‘s more a below-the-rim type of player who doesn‘t finish through the trees very well. He has a mid-range game, but he doesn‘t get to use it much because he can be guarded with either length or quickness. Having said that, he is a good defender and rebounder, and he doesn’t turn the ball over much. And he is capable of making threes if he can get open.
Tobe Awaka. I like him. He needs to play more. Less Uros, more Tobe. If Plavsic could stop commiting silly fouls and could make a few free throws, he might provide some useful minutes, but until then he needs to be cheering his teammates on from the bench.
