Barry Coached Vols' Offensive Line Since 1998
Jan. 10, 2003
Tennessee offensive line coach Mike Barry announced his resignation Friday from the Vols coaching staff, ending a five-year tenure in Knoxville. The Chicago native has been in coaching for 34 years and plans to follow other opportunities either in or out of the coaching profession.
"Mike did a good job for us and I wish him well in his pursuits," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "He was a part of our national championship team, two SEC championships and three Eastern Division titles, and I appreciate his contributions."
Barry came to the Vols from Southern California, where he was a part of the Trojans' staff for five seasons. He previously coached at Colorado and was a member of Bill McCartney's staff when the Buffaloes won the 1990 national championship. For his work with Tennessee's 1998 national championship team, Barry received an award as the Southeastern Conference outstanding offensive line coach.
"I want to thank Phillip and the University of Tennessee for the opportunity to be a part of this fine program," Barry said. "I enjoyed working with Coach Fulmer, his staff and especially the players. It is truly a great place. I simply feel at this time there are other opportunities to pursue in or out of coaching."
In May 2002, Barry was inducted into the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame, recognized for his contributions to the renowned high school league in America's third-largest city. Barry, who began his coaching career in the high school ranks, had other college coaching stints at Southern Illinois, Arizona and Iowa State. He also coached professionally for the San Antonio Gunslingers and New Orleans/Portland Breakers of the USFL.
