Casey Clausen
Erik Ainge
Rick Clausen
Jonathan Crompton
Matt Simms
Tyler Bray

How would you rate them?

Also, now that Hunter's career with UT is over, where would you rank him among the "greats?" Or would you even rank him up there?

Just interested in everyone's opinions, now that another QB's career in the book of UT football.

I think that nails it pretty well.

Simms needs to be WAY WAY WAY below anyone. I think that's a very clear indicator of where our program was during his time. Hoping for better things in the future.

Hey, I didn't even read yours and we are the same! Great minds think alike!

Hunter is NOT among the greats. He had the potential to be great but a knee injury and a sand bag season later he is an after thought.

But let me submit this to you....

Why would you say Tyler is better than Crompton?

Admittedly, Crompton had some bad games.

BUT Tyler Bray never won a big game, whereas Crompton won some big ones against Georgia and South Carolina, and almost led us to beat Alabama.

I mean, I know that Bray statistically was better, I'm just wondering what pushes Bray over Crompton.

(P.S. I'm not saying that I think Crompton is better/worse than Bray. I'm just throwing the wrench in there)

I'm guessing your age does not allow you to go back to far if that is the list of QB's you are asking about. None of them match up to Shuler or Kelly IMO and there are probably more going back b4 my days as a fan. Of your list I rate Casey Clausen a far ahead #1.

Interesting. I wouldn't rank Hunter among the greats at all for WRs. We've had the bar set VERY high in the past.

Oh I know.

I just always feel like after Martin, it was a different era of UT football, so I just marked it there.

If we went of all time, then absolutely, none of them hold a candle.

Tyler is better than all of them on physical talent but when it comes to Wins versus Losses and other things not so much. That said, given everything the kid had to endure here with the coaching staff and other problems I give him a bigger break than I normally would on maturity and leadership issues and think others are way too harsh on him.

It's worth pointing out that Tyler Bray never really had an example to follow in terms of either one of those things. Even so, he made our team competitive in games we had no business being competitive in given the chaos and lack of depth for most of his time here and his junior year every single game was on his shoulders -- not in your typical QB way either.

Crompton played horribly for much of his career and was positively berated for it by the Tenessee faithful. With Kiffin's tutelage, Crompton turned the corner during his senior season and finally began to perform near the level he was expected to coming out of high school. Bray had an up-and-down career statistically, feasting against the also rans and coming up short against premier SEC competition. Despite this shortcoming, there is no statistical comparison between Crompton and Bray; the latter comes out well ahead.
