Does this surprise anyone? We have solid, not great, but solid RBs and our OL was expected to be one of the best in the country. Why the struggles? Overhyped OL? No one respecting our passing game?

More the nature of our last 2 opponents IMO.

Pretty easy to scheme against our run game when the passing game is no threat at all.

We won't be 11th by the end of the season. Rankings right now are meaningless.

Until we get a passing game we want be able to run much. Florida and Oregon didn't respect our passing game at all put a lot of men close to the line of scrimmage. We have to be able to burn teams when they do that.

The O-line is better at pass protection, they are average at run blocking. Throw in the fact that the other teams know we are going to run most of the time, well there you go. The O-line has to play more physical and we need better QB play.

Not to point out the painfully obvious but UT has played better competition than many of the teams ahead of them. I don't know where UT will end up... but I am pretty sure Mizzou's trampling of Murray St, Toledo, and Indiana won't hold up against the SEC. FWIW, Toledo held them under 4 ypc and only 172 yds total.

Against good defenses: When you can't pass, you can't run either.

(You have to be 2-dimensional.)

Plus: An immobile QB doesn't help much when quite a bit of your run is the read/option.

It's more of a function of who we've played than anything. I'm pretty sure if we had played Murray State, Toledo, and Indiana (Missouri's schedule thus far) or La-Lafayette, Samford, Southern Miss, and Rutgers (Arkansas' schedule), we'd probably have more rushing yards per game.

Florida and Oregon certainly beat down our average.

I also agree with the idea that our lack of passing game is probably holding the rushing game back.

We've played two ranked teams and two unranked ones. Two bad defenses and two pretty good ones.

That's pretty representative of our full schedule.

No passing game with mediocre running backs will get you this.

Week 4 isn't representative of other SEC team's full schedules though.

SCHEME. These guys pass protect and that's what they are going to be paid to do at the next level.

You can't just take a bunch of guys that have been pass blocking 95% of their collegiate careers and teach them how to work in sync in a read option offense where you have a QB that can't throw and never actually keeps the ball. In case you didnt pay attention. Florida put 8 in the box almost every play. Every team on the schedule will do the exact same thing and do it effectively barring a miracle.

Overhyped OL. No way we should be 11th in rushing. There are certainly other factors at play, but we've not established any type of physical dominance running the ball vs anybody so far this season including APSU. This team desperately needs to rely on the certainty that we can impose our will running the ball. Hasn't happened yet.

A line with our experience and such high expectations should relish an opportunity to play against the best fronts week in and week out. We are in the Sec, not the WAC. They have under performed immensely thus far. They need to to step it up and take the pressure off our inept QB's by allowing us to be able to pound the rock in between the tackles.
