Urban Meyer's last two recruiting classes were among the best in the nation — and two of the best in school history.

His first Florida recruiting class is another story. It's almost as if the 2005 class has fallen into a black hole.

That class of 18 players is now down to only eight — and only two of those players figure to be starters this season — running back Kestahn Moore and wide receiver Louis Murphy, the offensive star of the spring game.

Here's a look at the players remaining from the 2005 class:

1. Simon Codrington - He's currently a backup offensive lineman.

2. Eddie Haupt - Like Codrington, a reserve offensive lineman.

3. Kestahn Moore - The probable starter at tailback.

4. Dorian Munroe - The No. 2 strong safety.

5. Louis Murphy - He emerged in the spring and nailed down a starting role with his eight-reception spring game.

6. David Nelson - Still-developing wide receiver who should see some playing time.

7. Jonathan Phillips - In the battle for the starting place-kicking job.

8. Ryan Stamper - A possible starter at outside linebacker.

Here's a look at the players who are no longer on the team:

1. Cornerback Avery Atkins, who died in Port Orange on July 5.

2. Linebacker Kalvin Baker.

3. Wide receiver Nyan Boateng, who left after the national title game.

4. Linebacker Jon Demps.

5. Tight end Brian Ellis, who failed to qualify academically.

6. Defensive end Darryl Gresham, who left the team earlier this year.

7. Safety Reggie Nelson, a first-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

8. Quarterback Josh Portis, who transferred to Maryland after the 2005 season.

9 Linebacker Eric Sledge, who quit before last season.

10. Offensive guard Ronnie Wilson, who was suspended for the season after his arrest for firing a gun during an altercation with another man.

The 2005 class was considered very good on signing day. It looks a lot different now as the Gators enter 2007 with a miniscule junior class

Ranking a player is determined by some things that are objective and others that are subjective. If a player goes to camps, then they are probably ranked higher because recruiting services have seen them more. Also, there is some projecting based upon potential too.
Also, if the players play in a program that has typically put out good football prospects or if they are a high profile school.

IIRC, Rivals' system is supposed to mainly be based off of NFL potential, but Dawson, you're right on the mark with how it really works. :eek:k:

when it comes toevaluating talent you win some and you lose some, but what kills me is the guys that self-destruct and never realize their potential
