Need someone to point me in the right direction. I've got a friend who has a very rare and old publication with one of the most famous sports figures in it and his autograph. Looking to get a good appraisal on the value of said publication. Anyone know an expert in rare publications? Thanks.

what is it? i can help.

Sports magazine before the launch of Sports Illustrated. My friend has asked me to start researching for him. He doesn't want to get taken. Have yet to lay my eyes on it so I don't know exactly which publication but has a layout in it of Babe Ruth during his playing days. Magazine supposedly dates back to that era and in his words is in mint condition although I know that has to be determined by someone that knows this stuff. Thanks.

I would contact a local antique shop or coin shop or sports memorabilia shop, although those are rare, and ask them for information on finding appraisers for sports memorabilia. The best bet is to try to get it authenticated and put in an auction.

Babe Ruth was marketed a lot, especially in magazines. Even if the magazine was from the 20's it probably wouldn't be worth more than $100 if that. The signature on the other hand can be quite valuable, it would have to be certified ofc.

Your location might help. As someone already said, find a local memorabilia shop and ask. Your best bet is to ask a shop that specializes in old coins. They would probably know someone to put you into contact with to get the signature verified.

First thing I would do is compare it to a real one.

If it's different than that then there is a 99% chance it's fake.

All the sports collectors seems to have styled on the PSA DNA or JSA authentication service for autograps. If it's authentic stick it in a decent auction. The authentication service will cost a few hundred bucks for Babe Ruth and the auction company will want 25-50 percent. Other option is to stick it on eBay and maybe get 10 percent of what it could be worth. Good luck.
