Heupal was part of the vols heisman curse and didn't even know it
Amen, brother.

Heup has been one of us for far longer than any of us realized.

JH studies the film and when he gets the players on defense that he wants he takes advantage of the matchups. He uses tempo to keep the same guys on defense.

I’m impressed.

Far too much influence of Yankee sportswriters, even in the secondary tiers. They have voted Big 10 so often that those "winners" cast their votes along the same lines. Bama's first award came just a few years ago. Could it be our time (Hendon's)? Only if the popularity continues to rise from continued success; and Michigan beats OSU.

It’s probably not fair, because the SEC is a grinder for anyone. Nobody can play in this league and have the same kind of chances of having undefeated seasons as Ohio State does year in and out.

There are some teams that can be good there, but even our mid tier teams often have elite aspects and talented players that can ruin you on an off day if they get some breaks. I don’t want to totally discount the competition there, but they don’t have as many top tier teams in the Big 10 consistently as the SEC.

Even though I think they have an easier path, I do have to admit that they often end being as good as advertised. It’s just hard to really say until you see them face off against the best teams from the other power 5 conferences, especially the SEC

I also think even if they are an elite team, and their players are top tier, it’s easier to have better stats with their schedule. So maybe C.J. Stroud is elite, and OSU is a legit championship team, but would he put up the same numbers in the SEC as our best players? F

His only real edge as far as I can tell over HH is his touchdown total, and a lot of that is because we score a bunch of rushing TD in the endzone while they score passing TDs.

Anyway, all of this is to say is they are often great as a team and have elite players but their path to the playoffs and also to individual awards is easier than for teams and players in the SEC.

Even if there isn’t some hugely biased pool of voters because of geography (not saying one way or another) and the resultant concentration of sports media, they are gonna get attention a lot because they will often be undefeated and also have really good individual statistics.

I think most people realize the SEC is the top conference but I still think the other conferences are overrated. The question is why?

This is just my theory but I think there are 3 reasons.
1. The major media (newspapers, magazines, TV) is located in the north and most of their readers are in the north. Especially true 75 years ago and still continues.
2. NFL did not exist is the south until Atlanta came on board and they never did much. Football was thought of as a northern sport because the pro teams were in the north.
3. This may be a misconception on my part but I get the feeling that prior to 1960 there was more elite teams in the midwest. Had several good/great teams in Big Ten along with Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and especially Norte Dame.
From 1960 till about 1985 IMO the conferences (SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10) were pretty even and Norte Dame.
From about 1985 on the SEC IMO started to excel but people tend to hang onto the past and people tend to think with their heart so think a little to highly of their own schools/conferences.
