Reading between lines of Fingers reports, we need a CB and a RT.

Is that what everyone else is getting?
I think once the portal opens in May, that we will see the Vols go in that direction.

At CB we have tons of numbers but not much quality (evidenced by last year) so I would be curious to see if some hit the portal to make room for new.

Conversely, at WR we have good quality but lack numbers. We play 3 WR sets and we have 4 good receivers (Ramel, Bru, Thornton and Squirel) .. we are two injuries away from needing guys like Chas Nimrod, Webb and Lealock with near 0 experience. We were down two WRs a lot last year so ideally having another good body there would give us peace of mind.

We lack bodies at ILB too and did address some with bringing BYU guy. Good news is Arion Carter might be able to help some based on practice reports.

They are cross training tackles so we have few options there .. plus Andrej Karic can play tackle if needed as well. But you can never have enough tackles in this league.

It will all depend on spots we have left. I still think we need a capable back up QB too ..

Can you explain what you mean? Are saying UT does not have the answer on the roster or they just need to identify the right guys?

I was saying that they’d love to find an SECcaliber starter at those positions in the portal if that’s possible in May.

Depends. Was it talent? Was it coaching? Was it simply lack of development and experience?

IMO, that would be the place to spend a scholarship assuming some guys choose the portal after spring.

More concerned about slot than WR. OTOH, they could play Sampson in that role. Not ideal but getting him in space with the ball is a good idea.

Honest question. How many do you think they need to fill two spots? They have two Srs, two Sophs, and two Fr. If you have a guy like Harrison or a S that can play close to the LOS then can you afford to be heavy at ILB?

True. UT doesn't need a rash of injuries at OT. No one really does... but UT in particular.

It will all depend on spots we have left. I still think we need a capable back up QB too ..
Good wish but IMHO it won't happen. Anyone who could help if actually called on will have better options. I feel the same apprehension you do but I think that position can only be resolved through recruiting for the next 2-4 years.

OK. I think they look at the BYU kid that way, right?

My best guess right now would be Jeudy-Lally and Burrell starting with Slaughter behind them then a log jam. There are a lot of teams with worse situations. We see FR starting every year at P-5 programs at CB.

Not sure to be honest. Beasly and Pili are experienced and will be good. Herring looks promising as well but behind that there is not much. Pak Garland can help some. Kalib Perry hasnt played much. Arion Carter and other freshman can play if needed but that means we are an injury or two away from complete unproven names there. Most previous seasons, I would be fine with this depth. But now we are looking at 10-11 wins, I do not want injurt bug at any position to derail it :)

I thought Perry looked pretty good in limited PT and on STs.

If Burrell hasn’t greatly improved by the time the season comes around then I bet he will get less minutes as the season goes on. We got 3 talented freshman corners who will be pushing him for playing time

You could be right. But they seemed to have a lot of confidence in Burrell before he got hurt. Martinez and Banks both seem to have a bias towards experience over talent.

Why would an SEC caliber starter want to transfer out?
Transfer to a winner. Start sooner elsewhere. Hates his coaches. Coaching change. Bad school experience. Bad social experience. Get closer to family.

There are quite a few reasons but IMO there are places where that kind of player would be all but guaranteed a starting spot. Unlike others, I don't think that's true at UT. There are A LOT of guys competing at CB now. That wasn't the case a year ago hence Burrell was essentially considered a lock.

I’m actually excited a little about CB. We seem to have lots of new bodies in the mix to give last year’s crew some competition. Looking at our signees and commits and targets, it seems clear to me that Heupel and Banks are intent on building a championship defense and are zeroed in on our back end. That’s a very encouraging sign to me.

No.

Brent was just now talking about how Darnell Wright has really been talking to Mincey about RT and how he needs to buy in into so that he can get paid one day.
Mincey is a talented kid that has experience. And Dayne Davis is another older guy with experience that is running 3rd at RT i believe. We're better than we've been in a long time a tackle period.

at CB you have Hadden, Slaughter, and even Charles who is now at safety that played a ton of snaps. Throw those guys in the BYU transfer and young 4.3 speed guys like Matthews and Gibson - who are 7 months early to college- and no, we don't have a problem there, either.

I think we'll be fine at RT. CB will be a toss up if they're going to take a step forward this fall.

Mincey did a solid job for us last year on the left side as OT, especially after having to get rid of those slimey scales he arrived with out of the portal as a former gator. However the staff and perhaps Mincey himself feel he's a better fit for the right side. He'll be great over there with a year under his belt on The Hill.

Unfortunately with the advent of the transfer portal, a lot of programs are saying this. If Milton goes down, we are scuh-rewed!

You mean last year when most of our secondary was injured for most of the year? I do not think there was a single game where we started the same 5 guys back to back
