I was listening to a podcast about the day of events, apparently the wall coming down wasnt supposed to happen as it did.
There was an East Berlin radio announcer who did the official broadcasts. And he got a notice that there was plans for more open passage thru Berlin wall for a while, and then it would come down officially months later. But the notice he had to read from had no real information, when the openings would happen, how many, where, when the whole wall would come down. So he gave a very brief "official" report on the radio, that people took it as the wall is open today.
This caused an immediate rush by civilians. And even though there were still orders to maintain the integrity of the wall, no one wanted to shoot a civilian over something that was going to happen anyway. So the wall came down much earlier than anticipated.
At least according to what I remember from this show.
