Realistic Expectations

Alright...

Regardless of the result of the bowl game, I believe next year's expectations should be:

1. Win the SEC East
2. Win the SECCG
3. Play in a BCS bowl

I let expectations of the program slide this year because of the 5-6 debacle, coaching changes around the board, a very tough schedule, and key injuries.

Next season, the program should be returned to an elite level. I felt CPF should not take too much heat this year b/c of the improvement. If the program remains good, but not great (8-4 / 9-3), there should be serious consideration for changing coaches (assuming they hire the PERFECT candidate at the PERFECT time. If it is not the best possible hire, they should keep Fulmer)

I dunno, the east is making a rise in talent. USC is playing tough their only going to get better, UGA i believe should be pretty solid next year, I think next year in the SEC is going to be the toughest it has ever been, WELCOME TO SEC football CRR:thumbsup:

Georgia has been playing a lot better at the end of the year. Richt will have another year to work on Stafford. Massaquoi will be back. They'll have Caleb King. Anyway, I expect Georgia to be better.

I would ask what is the perfect time and the perfect hire but I will settle for the Perfect Hire...

I did not have any specific coach in mind when I wrote the thread.

I do not want a situation like Alabama has had this year (even though I think they got a pretty good coach in Rodriguez).

They had several coaches in mind ahead of CRR, but did not get them.

When UT eventually changes coaches from Fulmer (whether it is 2,5,10,20 years from now), they need to get their #1 choice and nothing else.

They should not settle for a mediocre coach because they have already fired Fulmer and MUST replace him. If they can't get the best coach possible, wait another year to make the move.

[As a sidenote, I believe it would be best to get a top coordinator or top DII coach - i.e. Bob Stoops or Jim Tressel. I would prefer to bring in a younger guy from a smaller school with enthusiasm.

In all actuality, I want Bruce Pearl, but in football]

Realistic expectations for next year: Cal, Florida, and Georgia are toss up games. We should win at least 1 of those three, hopefully 2. We should lose to Arkansas, however, not as bad as we did this season. Other than that, we should win out. So, without a running game again in 2007, here is my wish list:
  1. 10-2 Regular Season
  2. If we win the SEC East, keep the SECCG close
  3. If we somehow win the SECCG, draw Big East or ACC Champ in bowl game.

Lose to Ark. That's absurd. Their offensive line loses five starters. I don't care who the RBs are, if the line sucks, they will struggle. Additionally, the defense is suspect after losing Houston and Olajabutu. Finally, we're playing them in our house. If we're OK with losing that one, we should just write off the season now.

Some teams have what is called position depth. Not everyone gets to claim they have a young team after every loss, every year.

You wanna regale me with tales of their depth? I happen to live in Fayetteville, see all of their home games, read all of their local news (and it's a loak) and can probably tell you a little something about it. But please, enlighten me about their position depth

Should have covered this in the earlier post, so I'll ask forgiveness now.

KPTvol: I'm kinda new here so I don't yet know where you stand on things, but are you one of the Fulmer apologists and you're just setting me up now with low expectations so that if we lose three games next year I'll still get to say "but we're just two years removed from going 5-6, give it time, we're on the right track?" If so, just stop responding to me because I'm not a believer in the lowered expectations and am certainly not a Fulmer fan.

i think USC could be a similar surprise next year in the East like Ark was in the West this year...maybe not the same success (win the division)...but eventually they'll start winning some of those close games and finish with a 9+ win season....

What the hell does playing "in our house" have to do with the outcome of a game in the post-national championship era!:banghead2:

I think the derrogatory way in which I referred to teams that claim to be "young" tells you what you need to know. As for Arkansas, I imagine that having one of the best RB combos in recent memory should help their offensive line recruiting. Also, this isn't the first year that Arkansas has been a great rushing team. They've had a great running game for years. I'd be interested to know how many times they've led the SEC in rushing, recently. Houston Nutt typically does a good job of getting more from less (with the exception of 2005). I think their running game will be just fine. Also, the QB play should be improved, which will keep some pressure off.

His less with more results must be the reason he was on the chopping block if this season hadn't worked out. As for UA's greatness, Vandy beat them everywhere but the scoreboard, Alabama had to miss an extra point to allow them into overtime and eventual win. Fortune smiled on them where it frowned on us. Little to do with the quality of the coaching. That's the nature of competitive football.

I'm going to assume this post is littered with typos, because I can't figure it out. Guess you'll have to bang your head on the wall a bit more and simplify things for me so I might understand.

If you must know, I was talking about home (H-O-M-E) games (ie. at N-E-Y-L-A-N-D stadium in K-N-O-X-V-I-L-L-E). I would guess that we have a better chance of winning there than at Reynolds Stadium in Fayetteville - pre, post, beneath, beside or under championship era.

Are you implying that it wouldn't have been worse if all of those home losses had been on the road.

Neyland lessened the blows IMO. Location has little to do with our losing big games. We are equal opportunity in that department and the main culprit rumbles up and down the sidelines with a deer in the headlights look on his face. We are routinely ill prepared for big games, our or their house, but I hear what you're saying.

Look at our most recent big road wins against Georgia. Also some sucess against Florida on the road. Maybe we should play in white uniforms at home.
