1) The team is stronger and in much better condition. They just ran 52 110s and Maurice Couch just squated 500lbs and also nearly benched 500. (On a side note, at 43years old I just maxed my bench at 350). McCullers has abs, nuff said.

2) Butch is a leader, plain and simple. I am a devoted follower of leadership guru John Maxwell and he says, "Everything rises and falls on leadership." I 100% believe that. There is a reason this staff stays intact for the most part. They believe their leader can get them to where they want to go. It seems as though the players are buying into his leadership and speaks volumes considering the coaching carousel they've witnessed. It would be so simple for them to be jaded and cynical, but they have been the opposite of that.

3) Former players returning. Watching the 30 for 30 on The U, I was struck by the former players heavy involvement in the program. This is crucial to the heath of a major college program that puts players in the league. Lane Kiffin for all his issues embraced that, DD did not. Butch has worked tirelessly to rebuild that bridge. From the gatherings around the state with former Lettermen to reaching out to Phil, Johnny, Doug, and the like, Butch has hit a home run. I was most impressed by Arian Foster showing up to DJ practice. Butch knows how to build relationships, perhaps more importantly, he knows how to mend broken ones.

4) The ability to embrace the modern while celebrating tradition. It may be minor, but adding to our uniforms is usually met with a furor that is reminiscent of the LA riots. Butch has brought something new to the table and managed to clearly demonstrate his love for our hallowed rituals. The state outline is all about "I Will Give My All For Tennessee Today". The players get it. The word Tennessee on the front of the away jerseys is brilliant. It one fell swoop we become more modern and who can complain about the name Tennessee being there? Butch is reaching genius levels here in my humble opinion.

5) Recruiting. We all know that you need the X's and O's, but you it doesnt matter without the Jimmys and Joes. The recruiting has far exceed my expectations. It seems that Butch's message is being received loud and clear. All DD told us was why we couldnt, all Butch is telling is that there is no reason we cant. Players love the positivism and so does a beaten down fan base.

6) Football is cyclical, just look at Bama's years in the wilderness. The Vols are due. We have all the ingredients to rise back to the top and I believe it begins now.

7. Discipline: Johnny Majors recently said this about Jones, "They are certainly emphasizing technique, effort and discipline. That’s where you start."
Ainge has been talking about this all week. I believe discipline was the element Wilcox brought to the defense that fell off so badly last year under Sal. The return of discipline fuels my optimism!

All great points!! I'll add another...

7.) A lot of people forget that before the horrendous Sal Sunseri experiement, we were a top 25 defense the year before! That was when guys like AJ Johnson and Curt Maggitt were true freshmen! As far as I can remember, pretty much that same exact defense is still here with the exception of Malik Jackson. There is absolutely no reason why this defense can't overachieve and at least do well enough to keep us in games!

I feel this way every August and I try not to get too high here, however I agree with you. No national Championships this year but 7-8 wins would be a C.O.Y. type job for him and I think it is possible. however 6-6 is still acceptable this year with our death trap of a schedule.

Thanks OP. Great post and I agree with everything you said. I love that Butch is reaching out to former players, tweaking the uniforms for a little flash, and recruiting his a$$ off! Did not know that about Couch and McCullers, WOW!! I'm pumped, we are due! GBO

DD apparently having a "your not welcome" policy reguarding former players is astonishing to me??? Grounds for firing on that alone IMO!

8. A dedicated staff that lives, breaths, and eats football 24/7. If you are taking anti-depressants you can toss them in the garbage, after a few bumps in the road UT will be back to it's winning ways.

I think more than anything, the players and recruits can look at Butch's resume and say "if he can do here what he did there, then I'd run through a brick wall for the guy." You simply did not have that with Kiffin or Dooley...especially Dooley. To me, that's the crux of the whole matter. It's why I wanted Gary Patterson each time we tried to hire a new coach. He has a body of work that is impressive and players can place their confidence in him.

One other intangible aspect I think will make a difference, is that everyone...including lots of Negavols, here, cried in their cereal bowl over the (fallacious) notion that "Nobody wants this job...it's too challenging." :mf_surrender: BUTCH WANTED THIS JOB!...and unlike Dooley, he was/is well qualified for it! He embraced the challenges that come with it. Just as losing is a disease...even among this fanbase, having a coach who relishes a challenge will rub off on the players, too. You can see it whenever you look at Cincinnati. Just last year, they played with a below average QB, in Munchie Legaux, and still found a way to win. They are a scrappy bunch, that doesn't back down, when the heat is on.

While Butch may not have had as much of a record or national spotlight as Patterson, he still falls into that category...of one who can compete with bigger, more talented programs. He can relate to the kids better, too...using social media as an effective recruiting tool.

So, yeah...he's outdone my expectations to this point. I just hope we can carry that momentum into the season.

There are 3 options for Butch's future as HC at UT. Retire after a long, successful career on the hill, leave for another program after some measure of success here, or get thrown under the bus by VN for not winning enough and subsequently get canned.

Rexvol, congrats on 350lb bench. I just got there myself on Tuesday of this week (previous max 345). I got 300 on incline then 350 on flat.

This team is going to surprise some folks this year, I just feel it!

I don't think your post was bad, but we see threads like this every year.

(Love the team, I'm going to the Swamp)

But I don't see anything better than 2-2 in the first 4. And 7 tops on win total. Hope I'm wrong.

Saban also said a few times that Dooley was doing a "fantastic job".............

We don't see threads like this from Rex.

That in itself makes me more hopeful.

Predicting UT to return to the top isn't exactly a reach... The "when" is Saban's out.
