Playing time. Can’t start for current team.
Discipline/climate. Dont get along with current coaches.
Grades/seeking lower academic requirements.
Environment change/just dont like current location (may want to be closer to home and family).
Money/Looking for more NIL (starter at current school).
Prestige/looking for bigger stage at a higher Brand school (starter at current school).

im sure there are a few more.
But as far as UT is concerned, I’d think we would be more interested in current starters.
id think if they dont currently start, they might not have the talent to start at UT.
And why should UT bother signing backups.
show me how I’m right or wrong.

I understand your point about starters, but there are always some good backups (Hooker and Milton) out there. There are times a player is behind a great player, has a skill set not appreciated by the coach, was injured, etc.

NIL, what you see now is a circus. There was an increase after they waived the eligibility to not sit after the transfer. But now after NIL, it is insane!

A player on a roster that can’t start because that roster has too many good players at that position, like Williams from Ohio State who went to Bama. Or a player that is in a system that doesn’t fit his ability. A lineman who needs to be in a 3-4, but is in a 4-3 defense.
On a slightly different portal topic, it’s encouraging that none of the UT players who have entered the portal seem likely to to be major contributors.

How about another category

New coach hired & bad system fit (like Tyler Bray when we hired Butch)

Great player at small school or a school that isn’t football crazy like Indiana or Northwestern or Chattanooga that wants the experience/exposure/competition/NIL of playing at a major football university like Ohio State or UT.
