"I have never had a head coach spend an entire day with me and my family, that was huge," said Young to 247Sports. "Not only was the head coach with us the entire day but I got to spend time with Coach (Kelsey) Pope, the entire staff and their families. That’s love."

I'm sure that's the standard operating procedure for Heupel when it comes to how he interacts with four-star and five-star recruits.

The fact that's how he also treats a three-star recruit shows that Heupel doesn't see recruiting stars when he's interacting with a prospect. Instead, he just treats everyone the same way.

And it makes sense from the coaching staff's side. You're checking out who you're going to invite into YOUR family, into YOUR daily life for the next 4-5 years.

I'm confident that the coaches also get their wives input on assessing the recruits and their families, as women usually pick up on things we men miss.

Right you are. My wife seems to have an innate sense about such things and can sniff out a fake pretty quickly. She always says about my daughter's boyfriends, "I don't know him well, but I have a bad feeling about him and don't trust him" and 99% of the time she is proven correct.

My wife disliked Jones and Pruitt, didn't trust Lane (but liked Monte).

But she also liked Dooley, so...

Personally, I thought they were all really bad hires except for Lane and she was right about him.

Same with mine. My wife absolutely loathes Lane Kiffin. I actually think he’s kind of hilarious.

Shame that Head BB Coach Bruce Pearl didn't pay attention to the NCAA rules on what you can and cannot do w recruits. Just hoping CJH and his staff memorize that page outta Pearl's handbook on how NOT to interact with recruits. Go Vols!

Honestly, I doubt that's true. But he may see this player different than the recruiting sites. They rate him a 3* but Heupel may see a lot more there.

My guess is that he doesn't treat players he regards as lower talent the same as he does those he sees as great potential additions.

She is a casual football watcher. When I am watching the Vols she usually stays in another room because she says when she comes in and watches with me they start to suck so she sees herself as bad luck. I'm sure she would have seen through him if she had watched closely. Even I was skeptical of him, but I am too far away and disconnected from campus to know the true behind the scenes shenanigans. I always have hope, but my BVS kicks in a lot. On a trust scale from 1-10 with used care salesmen and lawyers (apologies to used car salesmen) being a 1 I would say Brick by Brick Butch was about a 3.

That 3 is overly generous.

I'll have to disagree, even though it's usually safe to be pessimistic about any human's behavior.

First, Heupel wouldn't be hosting and recruiting a "lesser" talent unless he still saw him as someone who would improve his team, and that's the goal every day. So why would he put less effort into someone he needs? If he misses on this recruit, he then has to go after the next best guy. That's a downward trend.

Secondly, in a social media universe, coaches can safely assume that whatever they tell a recruit or his parents, and however they treat them or relate to them, could eventually be read by a thousand potential recruits and families. There is no privacy for them in today's world. You have to be yourself, because no one can keep up a lie, a contrived public image, 24/7 for years to come.

Underrated post for sure.

Not sure what you are disagreeing with.

He has a certain amount of time to invest. My point was that he may think as highly or more highly of that 3* as he does the 4/5* recruits being considered for the same class/position.

The premise of the statement was that somehow he MUST view a 3* and a 4/5* as having the worth/potential assigned to them by the recruiting rankings. I very much doubt that's true.

There is some truth to that but it isn't absolute. Recruits are fairly careful about throwing mud at coaches that recruit them... even if they don't like them or how the recruitment goes. Other coaches pay attention just like other recruits do. A recruit doesn't want to be viewed as someone who will talk bad about a coach either.

What do you mean teenage years. My daughter is 39, tall, athletic, attractive, has an MBA and a good job but still ends up with losers. One problem is she goes for athletes and is disappointed time and again. I told her to look for nerds. In high school there was this chubby kid who had a crush on her and she didn't pay any attention to him, but now he owns two restaurants and flies his own plane so I say see, see, see. LOL

Make sure the prospective guy has a high credit score.

I saw a man wearing a tee shirt the other day that said "DADD" "Dads against daughters dating".
My motto is, "Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see". Applies to daughter's dates and the so called "news media".

My motto is, “Never believe anything you read or hear”. My eyes have never lied to me. Of course, as AI advances, all three might fall into that category.

Yeah. When I wrote that I thought of AI and how we really can’t believe anything anymore. I’m sure the SOBs in politics are already all over it. The next Peepee dossier will come complete with fake video.

I agree, precious time would factor in this. You have to pick and be a good judge with instinct were you really want to invest time in the recruiting game.

I think time, money, and resources are an often overlooked thing in recruiting. There are limits imposed by the NCAA beyond what a school can allocate. And when it comes to the most important time... you have 10 coaches with whatever time they're able to invest. The HC's time is a premium.

It is interesting that Heupel seems to involve his family as often as he can in the "fun" part of recruiting.
