I posted this on another thread but thought worth discussing here. I think one of the things if you go back 15-20 years UT always had the largest recruiting budget in the country. Now that distinction belongs to uga. Why? All that talent they have an hour from campus, why does georgia spend so much? And to flip that, Tennessee always said we recruit nationally. We used to pick kids out of California, Texas and Florida regularly. Carolina and Virginia gave us some good talent. Why not go back to what worked. Go anywhere/everywhere to find the best 4-5 star players, and that will make it easier to pick up the local high-3 stars that you really build your team around.

ACcording to 247, UT is 3rd in the country so it's not like they're not spending money. But 3rd in budget bringing in the 31st ranked class, something seems very far off. If Tennessee throws another $2mil into recruiting and get back to the top, does that get recruiting into the top 5?

If you look at UGA’s class in 2020, they got 3 from Texas, 2 from California, 1 from Nevada, 1 from Arizona, 1 from NJ, 1 from DC, and several from Louisiana. Only 7 of 25 from Georgia. Higher percentage are in state in the current class, but they will recruit nationally.

I’ve always thought we spend a lot because we have to, not because we want to. More talent is coming from the midstate, so it could continue going down.

If you can’t figure out why then there’s no hope for you!

As soon as the NCAA decides what Tennessee's fate is, the money will be more productive. I'm sure other schools are still using this against us. Add to that the coaching hire mistakes. From Kiffin through Pruitt, Tennessee has been pretty much irrelevant for the last 12 years. Seems like so much longer than that, but it's gonna take a coach, (hopefully Heupel) a while to get the attention of the best players and gain their interest in playing here.

We’ve been first at various points over the last ten years. We used to be more successful recruiting nationally because we were winning at an elite level. It wasn’t recruiting nationally that got us there.

Our lack of recruiting success is worrisome. I’m curious what the 23 class will look like and hopefully that the end to the investigation along with additional time to build bonds leads to a better 23

Two points:
-budget doesn’t make up for good recruiters that can close.
-recruiting isn’t over yet

You hit the point. Georgia doesn't have to recruit nationally yet they do because they want the best players not the closest players. Tennessee doesn't have enough quality players within 1 hour so recruiting has to be wider but with the FL big 3 being down there's no reason Heupel shouldn't be plucking offensive talent from down there.
