Before that trade, the conventional team building path was get proven players/stars by any means necessary in lieu of hoping to hit on them in the draft. I was an early draftnik, so I saw the wisdom but it wasn’t publicized that the players Dallas received had draft picks attached if they got cut before the end of the season. That was the hidden genius of the deal. The other was what Jimmy DID WITH THE DRAFT PICKS. Other teams have gotten hauls from trading Pro Bowlers…like the LA Rams with Eric Dickerson. But they didn’t draft savvy or make follow up trades like Jimmy with the Cowboys. Jimmy also didn’t win every personnel move, but he got it right way more than wrong and that’s all I ask of Poles. This one didn’t work…next.Cowboys came out smelling like a rose...in that deal Herschel never done anything in Minnesota...Cowboys took those Draft picks and won 3 out of 4 Super Bowls..would have been 4 if Jerry and Jimmy could have got along longer than 10 minutes...
