The problem is that it is always subjective and there really isnt an exact formula to it. If a team doesnt play for their conference title and doesnt win it, they should not leapfrog a conference champion with the same record unless........there is a no doubt consensus that the team who didnt win their title is much better than the conference champ. You cant say that bammer is much better than Utah with Mac Jones at QB, I dont care what talent he has around him. He cant throw the ball downfield and bammer hasnt shown this year that they can rely on the run game. They need to do away with this committee BS and make this whole thing a real playoff. Play one less regular season game and expand the playoffs.
someone will.

like i said, if you go back and remember, the issue with the BCS was that teams 3 and 4 usually had an argument to be in the top 2....

how many times during hte BCS era did we clamour for a 4 team play off? every year.

that still doesn't rule out the then next big argument for teams 5 and 6, but you at least eliminate the committee and have an impartial system for determining the participants.

i'm against adding more to the playoff. the regular season is already losing some of it's luster, and if you expand it to 8 teams, the it really won't matter if you win your conf....as almost half the field would be non conf champions. so PSU/OSU means nothing as far as getting in. BAma/LSU means nothing as far as getting in...GA/LSU means nothing as far as getting in.

meh.

i meany really, winning that "big" game in the regular season to get in posiiton to win your conf...and you reward? gotta do it again, cause the other team gets in w/out having to win the conf...or division?

if we had an 8 team playoff in 98, Florida would have made it.

and i gotta tell you, you go undefeated, win your conf title, finish #1 headed to the bowl, and your reward is you have to play Florida again?

there should be a reward for winning your conf. that should still mean somehting. if you expand it to 8 games, it means a whole lot less and actually helps the at large teams that don't have to play in it, especially if you're a fringe top 8 team....and lose the title game....whereas if you're a top 3 seed, you can likely lose the title game and still get in....

there's a lot of holes in that.

5-7 to 8-5 is just a +3 isn't it?

To be fair, Utah's defense isn't bush league or anything.

#1 in rushing defense, giving up just 55.9 yards a game
#4 in scoring defense, giving up just 10.9 points a game
#17 in passing defense, giving up just 187.9 yards a game
#3 in total defense, giving up just 243.8 yards a game

Also while looking that info up, Tennessee is 24th in passing defense & 32nd in total defense!
again, i'm not saying Utah is trash....just that they're going to have to take all this and decide...is Utah or Bama one of the 4 best teams........?

and i think Bama has a shot at getting in over them in that discussion.

a good shot actually. but i wouldn't be absolutely shocked if Utah got in either;. they do have a case.

well, i mean in some cases, the eye test is right.

w/out scoreboards telling you who's better, conversations like this simply boil down to "who do you think is better? Bama or Utah? which one of those two is one of the 4 best teams in the country?"

so if you're asking me, i think if Bama played Utah, Bama would be a low double digit favorte.....

the playoffs really started last weekend...weekend before for some others (PSU/MN/OSU/OR)....some won and advanced, others didn't....and it'll continue this weekend for Bama, OSU, Utah....and OU to a certain extent.
I just hate that it can't be the champions of some conferences plus 1 or 2 that pass the eye test. Because changing it from 2 to 4 teams is still only giving you a few teams. We all know that they don't always pick the teams that are going to win.

I guess my thing is Alabama's defense hasn't looked as stellar as in the past and without Tua I don't think they're good enough to beat quite a few of the top 10 teams.

They gave up 23 to USC, 31 to Ole Miss, 28 to A&M, 46 to LSU.

Hopefully Auburn spanks 'em, the Tigers haven't given up more than 24 points to anyone all season. Even with 3 losses, they held Florida to 24, LSU to 23 (lowest of the season), Georgia to 21

The +4 would include the bowl W.

I actually think a Bama/Utah bowl game would be a great game. Strength on strength.

i will say this, if you do expand the play off, then the most ipmartial way to do it is to ONLY allow conference champions in.

that way your keep the intergrity of the reguluar season and your conf title game.

it should mean something to in win the conf....

SEC, Big10, pac 12, big 12, ACC champs all get in. and then you take the 3 highest ranked conf champions from the group of 5, seed them based on whatever ranking you want to use (i'd advocate for the BCS formula), and go play.

you kill all the birds with one stone. the little guys get included so UCF or Boise or Memphis would get their shot. and you keep the integrity of the regular season/conf titles.

i'd go for that.....and sorry if you're #1 LSU and lose to UGA. you're out. Sorry #2 OSU if you lose to whoever...you're out.

bottom line, you can't have it both ways with this imo. you can't say this team deserves to be in because they won their conf (Utah), and then say but this team deserves to be in because they've looked the best all year (LSU/bama/OSU)....the criteria for paticipation is completely different for both teams, and is inherently not fair.....LSU gets in no matter what happens against UGA.....but Utah can win it's conf title game and get left out, rightfully so mind you..........

I guess I just got a lotta respect for the Utes, having stayed up and watched quite a few games of theirs.

Huntley has a legit argument for best QB in the PAC-12.

75% completion percentage (2nd to Joe Burrow)
2608 yards, 11.2 an attempt (3rd behind Hurts & Tua)
14 TDs just 2 INTs
228 rushing yards with another 5 TDs
187.6 passer rating (5th in the country)

And Moss is having a great season, 1158 yards with 14 TDs at 6.4 a carry, caught another 320 with a TD too.

I don't think we can replace Calloway, Jennings, or Trey.

I am hopeful that Palmer, Johnson, Gibbs, Tillman, Keyton are able to be solid. If Brandon returns then the OL can still be very good, with Morris, Wright, Carvin, & Calbert returning and getting more experience. I also like Lampley and Chris A. potential.
