Only way we have a chance at pulling off the upset this weekend will be us gaining the upper hand on one side of the ball in the trenches for several series... Watching GA's games, at any point the other team was noticeably winning in the trenches, the momentum definitely shifted...

we've seen with our defense already this year, they have spurts where htey look all world....and then there's spells during the game where they look slow and completely lost....they're still looking for consistency.

This is what is so perplexing..I think it is because when we go to a zone, for some reason the defense loses.."passion" or maybe "urgency" is the right word..maybe it is just because everyone is thinking instead of attacking..

It is weird though.

Disagree. Commit to the run with our giant Oline, make them sell out to stop it, beat them over the top in man coverage.

We don’t need gimmicks. Line up and beat them.

And we are closer in talent than we have been in previous years to do just this... unfortunately we are a year or two off from going toe to toe, so I'm all for a few wrinkles and tricks to get some points...

I agree, but we can’t have back to back to back possessions of 3 straight running plays and punt. JG is going to have to make some throws.

That was the story for a long time, but later investigations found that some of the bombers they escorted had been shot down. Not a whole lot, but they were only human.
Were they lost to air or just flak? Cant blame the red tails for the 88s doing their job.

i think it's simply because in a zone, you have to be aware of more than just your job. read, recognize, react....and understand what your teammates' responsibilities are, and how it's all supposed to fit together...... that's a mental process that takes a little longer than "go get the guy with the ball" or "stick on this dude here".

as they do it more, get more reps in practice, those mental process speed up and they'll just be able to play.

perfect example was Crouch against MO, when he got beat by the TE. he read, he recognized, but by the time he recognized, it was too late, and he was a step behind the guy and out of position. it was a good throw too, to a tall target, but had Crouch been able to just hold his spot and take the TE right at the snap...who knows...maybe he baits the QB and gets a pick...or at least a pbu.

i don't think passion or want to have much to do with it....i think zone just requires a little more preparation. and really, the only way you get better at it is to do it, put stuff on film and learn from it.....that just takes a little longer to develop....i think by the end of the year, if everyone's still healthy, this defense will be pretty dang good, no matter what situation you put them in.

I have to say when it comes to blitzing, Crouch absolutely does not tip toe up in there. That boy is a load.

I think it’s true that our defense needs another year or two. I don’t think that’s true on offense. As long as JG is decent we can absolutely go toe to toe with Georgia. We did it last year in the second half against Bama with a less talented and experienced offense.

agreed. phsyically, i think our defense overall matches up pretty much w/anyone.....just gotta get all the pieces on the same page....at the same time....especially in the back end. that's where we've struggled the most really.

and it's been feast or famine with that group. i think everyone would agree that both Bryce and Alontae have both made outstanding plays for us already this year....but they've both been victimized by opponents too....safeties haven't been stellar, and there was a point during the USCe game where i was like "why isn't USCe running that slant like every single time...we haven't covered it yet"...lol.

but i've seen enough already to know that there's some good players on defense...and they're going to get better and better......

One line of thinking common on VN about this game, that I hope the team is not thinking...

“We can’t make any mistakes if we want to win.”

Mistakes will be made. Being afraid of mistakes tends to lead to mistakes.

Just play ball. If the breaks go against you, put on more steam.

We don’t have to be perfect to win this game. We just have to end up with more points than them. Trying to be perfect produces timidity. Just play. Be physical. Be aggressive. Make plays. Forget being perfect.

Right now, I do not think it will rain much during the Tennessee Georgia game. Personally, I think this is a good thing because it will allow JG to throw the ball around a bit more.
So, we have some people who think it's best for us if it rains and others who think it's best for us if it doesn't rain. What all this means to me is that #WGWTFA!
