That's my thing. Would any of us not take any 3 of those guys over true freshman Dillon Gabriel? The same true freshman Gabriel that this staff oversaw throwing for 3,600+ yards, 29tds and 7 ints. I would be willing to bet that our QB puts up similar numbers this year, no matter who it is.
I was not impressed with Gabriel at all. I would take our QB room over him.

They could only run 4 plays with Gabriel. They ran the ball, ran a curl route, a bubble screen, and a deep ball. an occasional slant was thrown in there. That's literally the offense. The offense with Milton was wide open with the ball being thrown all over the field because Milton is a good QB with a strong arm. Gabriel isn't capable of running that offense.

Which is reassuring. Heupel will select a guy that he trusts to take care of the football. If he has to, he will simplify the offense and he will run only plays that are to this QB's strength. He will put a high premium on accuracy at delivering the football which is why his offense put up ridiculous numbers with Gabriel running just a few plays. The receivers will also have to make plays. But Heup is capable of simplifying the offense and playing to his QB's strengths which will help us this fall. It may not work against the Bama's and GA's of the world, but we aren't beating them anyway. We need to win a good amount of the games against the 9 beatable teams on our schedule. I have confidence he'll be able to do that.

Yeah I should have prefaced that with JG's deep ball completion % was what killed him. Since it's what Chaney wanted to do.

Good numbers though Hank, thanks for sharing.
That’s what i don’t understand about last year. JG wasn’t bad throwing short and intermediate but that was the minority in our offense. It’s like every play we wanted 40 yards. It just made it so hard on our players... OL had to block longer, delayed JGs reads, tougher throws etc. i hated the way he left here Bc i thought he cashed it in the last two games but Tyson Helton gave us the blue print for how JG could be serviceable. Throw the ball short, get it out of his hands, limit his reads, and occasionally take 50/50 shots. It’s like Chaney thought he still had bray back there i guess.

Unfortunate for him. But i wonder if this staff even likes him enough to fight through the bs and keep him. I really don’t care Bc honestly this scheme is going to be so QB friendly i think any 3 that we have (HH, HB, or BM) will be able to move the ball in this offense. It’s very simple
How bad was weinke at coaching qbs?

I really can’t say first hand obviously but from what i heard he was the typical “i was good at QB once and did it this way, so everything has to be done this way for everyone guy”. Instead of treating our QBs as individuals. That’s the other thing about the Maurer situation, when they decided to turn the thing over to him in 2019... tee took more of a lead in the offensive game planning Bc he ran a lot of RPOs and things at USC and UK when he was there and that’s primarily what we did against Georgia and the first few drives vs bama until Maurer got hurt. The offense was totally different than what we have been which is why we punched both teams in the mouth and looked like we belonged Bc they hadn’t seen it. But that’s something i feel comfortable that this staff will do is tailor their scheme to whoever their QB is... not just get a QB and force him to run things he can’t do... hoping that he will eventually get to that point.

Another spot on angle.

Gabriel isn’t anything special at all. He’s not ass or anything but his numbers are more indicative of the system he is vs how good of a player he actually is.
Do we have a guy that is as good as he is?

Nvm I see your response.

Dillon Gabriel threw 69 deep balls last year (most in FBS) and 66% were on target which ranked below only Zach Wilson, Trevor Lawrence, Spencer Rattler, Kyle Trask, and Mac Jones. He also had 14 deep ball TDs last year. Gabriel may not be elite, but his deep ball is. For that alone, give me him over any of our QBs. At least we know with Gabriel we can stretch the field and Heupel loved the deep ball at UCF.

He isn’t elite but he’s borderline top 10 in the nation. You can criticize his arm all you want but he put up numbers and threw an accurate ball. He certainly would start over the guys in our room if we have to bring in Joe Milton.

I think people are saying and I agree that Gabriel is a system QB.
