Thanks for the heads up, Uly! Exactly what I needed. I don’t know anything about YSNP. Ever been in fall? 9/23-10/3 are our dates. So it is not practical to do those spots I mentioned, leave, come back another day and bypass all that to check out the valley? We are only about 1 hr from the west entrance so getting there at day break is not a problem. Rookie here.

Download a map from the YNP website and meticulously make yourself an itinerary and stick with it, or you will miss even more amazing stuff than you are already missing.

I would do the southern Grand loop around to Canyon and see where you stand on time and go from there. The speed limit is 45 in some places, but 25 in a lot of places and there are almost always wildlife jams. To do what you were wanting you really need two days unless you are going to do like the Griswolds at the Grand Canyon. Here are a couple of screenshots to show you the route and then you can check it against your YNP map and pin all the stops you want to make on each day. The second pic is seeing Mammoth on the way to Lamar Valley and back.

If you are just going to spend one day there, then you will have to really narrow down to what you are determined to see. There are several great 1 day to 5 day YNP itineraries you can find online...hope this helps...

Is YSNP open 24 hours? Id like to take my father in law into the park and try to capture the Milky Way.

And yes I’ve seen the Tetons, they’re real and they’re spectacular. Kidding aside, it’s the most majestic thing that I’ve ever seen so far. But taking my wife and kids for the first time. Can’t wait to show them.
Yes it is open 24/7

Also..I missed the fall question earlier. Yes we have been there in mid September in 2017. The weather was dry for two months before we got there, and another month after we left, but we had freak snowstorms and totally crap weather the whole three days we had allocated to YNP that completely screwed our itinerary...I hope you get luckier than us.

Nice helmet.

Absolutely amazing to see the intellectual progression of mankind over the last 4,000 years.

Grand Tetons is the real gem. Be sure to budget time for there. YSNP is good too, but I'd take GT if I had to choose.
The Tetons are my favorite spot in my favorite place on earth (so far anyway) but I sort of disagree with you. Yellowstone is spectacular and amazing. I tend to just call the whole place Greater Yellowstone(which it is) and lump it all together.

Well they gotta drop somebody to raise all the Bama and UGA commits so it will most likely be our players. Not saying it’s warranted but that’s how they do these things.
well, if thats the case, should tell you something about how much creedence you give to said rankings.

I can name at least 5 good reasons why you want to spend at least two to three days at each loop.

The grand canyon of yellowstone should be bucket, Boys of Summer, boat trip from Lake to Island, Cody rodeo, beers on LL porch at sunset.

Do a guided bus trip around park. Covered wagon fireside cookout in Lamar Valley by starlight. Historical tour of Gardiner, Mammonth Hot Spgs, Red Lodge, Undine Falls, wolves of Lamar.

and that's just the north loop.
