The biggest wild card this year is QB. Not sure we have a QB with the explosive playmaking ability Helton wants. Looks like we'll have the power running component, but we'll have to see about the downfield passing.

It is. Stop star gazing. Butch didnt recruit many SEC caliber athletes and were implementing two new system with a first time HC, OC, and DC. Go into this season with no expectations. There are going to be awesome moments and there are going to be moments where people say Pruitt just isnt a head coach. The season will be more enjoyable if you go in with the mindset of watching the program and team get better each week
I dont think we need one. 75% of our offense is going to be runs, screens, and swings. As long as they hit on occasional shots we should be fine.
I agree. We're going to be a power running team and we have the physical backs to do that. But Helton wants that downfield passing game and the big plays, and I'm not sure we have the personnel for that. So we may not be able to run the offense he really wants to run this year. But we'll accommodate.
I've been trying to tell them this for months..it just gets you toasted. Everybody looks at HS star rating values and declares we have a lot of talent on the roster. They will throw out numbers and say things like "Auburns average rating for their roster is 3.56 and ours is 3.52 which puts right in the middle of the pack in the SEC"
Those numbers are garbage when nearly all the higher rated guys were either badly overated coming out of HS, or whose development has been derailed by complete program ineptitude or injury.
It is going to take more than a few offseason practices and one offseason S&C cycle to fix that. I think the team will be better and more cohesive, and agree we should look for good all around improvement in competitiveness and fundamentals this year, and we should expect improvement every year after that.
I am really looking forward to this season, and I hope that the VN mob has stowed their pitchforks and torches for this season, because I believe we have a real football coach for the first time in a long time...It just may not show up in results immediately.
I'm not sure if I agree with Cubelic's assertion about our rebuild...I do agree with SBVs take on it, though.
Keep in mind, Cubelic's comment about the rebuild (in my opinion) doesn't start with the Tennessee program on 7/17/18. It begins with the team that walked off the field after being beaten 42-24 at Vanderbilt. It's a long way from there to where we want to be, but some of the rebuild has already taken place (S&C program improvements, stronger and faster players, commitments from players that look like they belong in the SEC, etc.).
Listening to Cole Cubelics blistering critique of our roster on Josh Wards podcast this morning makes me dial back my expectations. When literally everyone in the media is telling you your team stinks and has a bad roster, you have to listen.
5.5 is a good betting line for wins this season. The difference between 5-7 and 7-5 will be a handful of plays. Any result outside of that range will be a shocker. And 7 wins alone may be a shocker.
Cubelic called Tennessee right now the hardest rebuild he has seen when you account for where the program is roster wise, where our opponents are and where our fanbases expectations are.
My long standing view since the Schianomo is that Pruitt has no honeymoon. This fall will be interesting to say the least.
