The biggest wild card this year is QB. Not sure we have a QB with the explosive playmaking ability Helton wants. Looks like we'll have the power running component, but we'll have to see about the downfield passing.

Guarantano having two actual QB coaches instead of zero should go a long way. I’m optimistic he turns the corner in this new system.

I don’t think we need one. 75% of our offense is going to be runs, screens, and swings. As long as they hit on occasional shots we should be fine.

Peterson wants to be at UT. Even with an academic RS, he could have practiced. But they're confident he'll qualify to play this year.

It is. Stop star gazing. Butch didn’t recruit many SEC caliber athletes and we’re implementing two new system with a first time HC, OC, and DC. Go into this season with no expectations. There are going to be awesome moments and there are going to be moments where people say “Pruitt just isn’t a head coach”. The season will be more enjoyable if you go in with the mindset of watching the program and team get better each week

I've been trying to tell them this for months..it just gets you toasted. Everybody looks at HS star rating values and declares we have a lot of talent on the roster. They will throw out numbers and say things like "Auburns average rating for their roster is 3.56 and ours is 3.52 which puts right in the middle of the pack in the SEC"

Those numbers are garbage when nearly all the higher rated guys were either badly overated coming out of HS, or whose development has been derailed by complete program ineptitude or injury.

It is going to take more than a few offseason practices and one offseason S&C cycle to fix that. I think the team will be better and more cohesive, and agree we should look for good all around improvement in competitiveness and fundamentals this year, and we should expect improvement every year after that.

I am really looking forward to this season, and I hope that the VN mob has stowed their pitchforks and torches for this season, because I believe we have a real football coach for the first time in a long time...It just may not show up in results immediately.

I'm not sure if I agree with Cubelic's assertion about our rebuild...I do agree with SBVs take on it, though.

Keep in mind, Cubelic's comment about the rebuild (in my opinion) doesn't start with the Tennessee program on 7/17/18. It begins with the team that walked off the field after being beaten 42-24 at Vanderbilt, sealing up the dubious honor of being the worst (based on record) UT football squad in history. It's a long way from there to where we want to be, but some of the rebuild has already taken place (coaching upgrades, S&C program improvements, stronger and faster players, commitments from players that look like they belong in the SEC, etc.).

I agree. We're going to be a power running team and we have the physical backs to do that. But Helton wants that downfield passing game and the big plays, and I'm not sure we have the personnel for that. So we may not be able to run the offense he really wants to run this year. But we'll accommodate.

Calloway and JJ are more than capable

When development and teaching is nil? Rating roster talent is a wash. None of us blowhards are qualified to render a verdict. Let the professionals work and the “I told you so” trophies will go out to the schlubs who guessed right.

I'm 100% wait-and-see on the QBs. Positive aspects to all of them and they're working hard... but we'll see where we are in September.

Yeah this is a good point. I also think these national media guys can't help but focus on the Schiano debacle when they think about our program. It's a dark cloud in their eyes. That won't go away until we win on the field.

But to be honest, nothing that happened last year or with John Currie has anything to do with what Pruitt, his staff and this team are doing now. I'm having a hard time not thinking we are on as solid of ground as we've been on in a really long time.

Listening to Cole Cubelic’s blistering critique of our roster on Josh Ward’s podcast this morning makes me dial back my expectations. When literally everyone in the media is telling you your team stinks and has a bad roster, you have to listen.

5.5 is a good betting line for wins this season. The difference between 5-7 and 7-5 will be a handful of plays. Any result outside of that range will be a shocker. And 7 wins alone may be a shocker.

Cubelic called Tennessee right now the hardest rebuild he has seen when you account for where the program is roster wise, where our opponents are and where our fanbase’s expectations are.

My long standing view since the Schianomo is that Pruitt has no honeymoon. This fall will be interesting to say the least.

There is still some credence to the argument that people are under-valuing our roster because they were so poorly coached and developed. That will not get fixed quickly, but I do believe we will see a big difference this year.
