Is that really it though? Didn't Jancek also leave? I just find it so odd to this day.

Odd to think that Butch came in with a better staff in 2013 than he ended up with in 2016 or 2017 despite hiring a million dollar coordinator in between.

IMO, though, I think he had more buy in from guys in 2014 and most of 2015. But guys slowly started to realize lose faith in his ability as a coach and the way he handled some star players led to him losing some respect from other players. He also never seemed to really get along with Shoop and it seems like at some point he lost his staff as well.

I’m still sitting at 5.5 after catching up on the commentary yesterday. I’m not confident we make a bowl game this fall. There’s just no one out there making a case that we will surprise. Between a brand new head coach, new schemes on both sides of the ball that don’t fit our existing roster, and a ridiculous schedule, this fall will be tough.

I really want to believe we have more talent than people realize but I have believed that every year for the last 10 years coming out of Media Days, and I’ve been wrong every year.

I think the media are speaking the truth about what our expectations should be.

I will enjoy it regardless. Looking forward to the season starting!

Butch taking that position was an awful, awful, awful career move. He should have accepted an FCS head coaching job before working as Saban's lackey. It won't rehabilitate his career one iota.

He has an image problem not borne out of unreliability or character flaws, but out of being a terrible coach. The only way to shed that flaw is to coach your way back into relevance, presumably as the head guy somewhere. He doesn't have the Xs and Os credentials that a Steve Sarkisian or a Lane Kiffin or a Huge Freeze have.

Dooley will get another shot as a head coach before Butch.

Pollack and Murray are just trying to get their names out there in case there is an opening on the next Dancing With The Stars meets the Bachelor show.

Because it's been an eventful football week.. Maybe a few things clarified from a roster standpoint... Why not?

Offense:
QB: Guarantano/Chryst -- feeling like we're in good hands regardless, as long as the locker room is together behind the starter.
RB: London/Chandler/Banks -- I like the committee approach. Not a whole lot of credence in a feature back anymore.
(Select packages-- FB: Pope/Blakely -- yes, please and out of the I Formation, too thanks)
WR: Jennings/Callaway/Byrd/Williams/Johnson/Murphy/Palmer -- too much talent there to be subpar. CDJ will have them helping the QB's tremendously.
TE: Wood-Anderson/Wolf -- It'll be nice to see a sixth OL on most plays involving the TE, but I'm also excited to see DWA catch some seams over the middle. Glad Eli knows how to block now.
OL (l-r): Smith/Richmond/Kennedy/Carvin/Hall starting with Tatum/Calbert/RyJohnson/JahJohnson/Tatum backing them up.. Lane well over 300 now, as is Devante Brooks now, right? I'm rooting for Brooks to carve out his niche, because he's worked hard to come back from injury over his HS Sr year, and to transition from TE to OL. Gotta be difficult to do. Don't look now, but our starters may be able to form a competent unit, especially against lower and middling front-sevens.

Defense:
Front Seven:
DL: Gooden/Tuttle/Phillips followed by Emerson/Crosby/Butler?/Bennett? -- We have pieces. I don't know how in shape Alexis Johnson is, and I don't know if we can rely on Deandre Johnson, even though he was a name that seemed to be doing the right things in practice last year. I like our starters here, and hopefully we have enough playable depth to be able to cycle through the 2-deep in a single game.
LB: Kongbo/Peterson/Bituli/Sapp with quality depth in DKJr/Taylor/Ignont/Allen -- I really can't wait to see our pass rush under Sherrer and Rocker.
CB: Alontae Taylor and (am I hearing this correctly?) Bryce Thompson could be starting the WVU game? Really doesn't bode well for depth, but Baylen Buchanan and hopefully Marquill Osborne can pick up some slack
STAR: Abernathy/Shamburger -- Abernathy got a little slower last year, and Shamburger had a game against Bama. This may be switched around by the time we play Mizzou.
S: Warrior/TKJr and a healthy rotation of Theo Jackson, please.

I may have on my orange-tinted glasses here, but it looks like we have some pieces to work with here. I don't buy for a second that Florida and Carolina out-class us when it comes to talent. We should definitely go bowling if our OL and QB play are even marginally better, which I think both are safe to bet on.

I'm not saying XV-Nulla, but I'm not not saying it either.

DKjr as a backup?

I think Emerson will play a ton. Just my opinion. We're not necessarily stacked along the defensive line. I think we'll need him.

I agree. I think he’ll play NT more than anything else. He put on weight/they put weight on him from his playing weight in HS (280—>303). He’s a massive guy, could see him doing damage at any position but NT might be his future role.

According to rivals and the current roster at UTSports we will have 43 blue chip players headed into fall camp. I think when the 247 Team Talent composite rankings come out near the end of fall camp they’ll have our roster ranked in the top 15 nationally. We have some exceptional 3 stars that will obviously contribute. Any optimistim I may display rides on thinking the coaching & culture change will have an immediate impact on bringing out the once heralded potential of some of these blue-chippers. Attitude is everything.

Dooley will get another shot as a head coach before Butch.

Totally agree. Dooley's issue was never X's and O's. Dooley's problem was recruiting and instituting a winning culture. After being an NFL position coach, if he can show aptitude as an OC, he'll get another shot at being a HC. Taking that analyst job at Bama was such an idiotic move, he's not going to get a look from anyone. He would be better off dropping down to the FCS level and building a program, proving he's learned from his past failures.

Not to dwell on the past but Butch Jones had good teams in 2014 and 2015. Things were looking up.

What the **** happened in the 2015 off season leading up to 2016?

I really think players and coaches began to see through him and the bull crap he was feeding them.

I don’t have the updated player weights in front of me but I feel like I remember seeing Abernathy had dropped a considerable amount of weight. Do you guys think this was for a possible move to dB instead of safety?

A comment that stood out to me from media days is even Pruitt was asked how he feels about the QB room/situation...

And he rewpond by saying he feels good about competition blah blah but the. He said he thought it was important to basically figure it out the starter quickly so our team can build some rythem.

I wonder even if he knows who his starter is...will he release it publicly or try and hide it from WV.

I thought that was a highly intelligent move by him as well.

What’s also funny is it is the complete opposite from Butch’s strategy on the subject. He would let it linger to the first game and tell both guys they’re going to start and play a ton.

IMO Lawson was a major blow. He was CF lite. Dude got after the players and held them accountable. I remember watching games and our guys were just tough, young but tough. We were the team nobody wanted to play because they felt it the next week. When he left they became soft and we got skull drug constantly.

If he narrows it down quickly he won’t be able to keep that quiet. Too many eyes and ears sharing info.

This is where I am. I really want to believe they could surprise, but with a miserable schedule and a big transition and limited difference makers it just seems unlikely. I’m hovering between 5 and 6 wins.

But like you, I AM excited for the season to start. About 5 months ago I was considerably more dour.

I believe the UGA reports are 95% accurate.

Still inappropriate to bring up... especially Pollack reporting it as “fact”.

I have no tears to shed. Let’s go win

What are the rumors there that we know about?

I know he and Richt got into some arguments are there has been speculation that Pruitt either showed up at Richt’s house hammered or use some fowl language around his family.

And I think everyone knew Pruitt was gunning for that head coach job knowing Richt was on the hot seat.
