apparently the staff is focused on offense right now because they see more talent/upside there (TE, WR, trying to find an OT)

could focus more on defensive guys/depth coming out of bowl

This is all so fluid. Coaches are still try to figure this all out.
I have even heard that some players have been promised NIL at some schools and then never received their money. Possibility of lawsuits. Some really unscrupulous characters working behind coach’s back, making promises to players and not coming through.
We are very fortunate to have Sprye

I know Bass is all bent out of shape about our portal recruiting, but I gotta say I have confidence things will work out. I could be wrong, but it doesn’t seem like the portal has that much talent in it at this point as we saw last year. At least, nothing that screams instant upgrade. Maybe that is why staff is moving slowly.

We have a handful of available spots. Tony Grimes seems like one of the only impact guys we were really connected to. Maybe staff feels more will enter the portal in the Spring which is why they are holding.

This is all getting crazy. Players are reaching out to schools and asking for crazy money. They are negotiating. The coach I talked to had been told that their former player committed to Vols and was waiting to announce. The coach thought it was done deal.

Interesting. Sounds like a lot of these dudes might get stuck in there. Or have to shoot for backup plans. I know you won't say but hopefully the new target is an OL or LB

I agree but I also think that on the defensive side of the ball for some odd reason they are satisfied with all but just a few spots. I go back to what CJH said when he first got here, as long as a defense can stop splash plays and long sustain drives that's what he is comfortable with. (Not those exact words but..) I honestly think they have some guys they believe can play and they are sticking with it except for maybe a spot or two. They see them everyday in practice and I don't so who knows.

Offense is Heupel's baby, so of course he sees more upside on that side of the ball. But that's one of the few things that worries me about Heupel. Is he so offensive-centric that he fails to see the needs on defense? For sustainable success, we will have to field an adequate defense. They don't have to be world-beaters as long as the offense continues to rake in points, but they have to be adequate, otherwise, you get games like SCar.

There are plenty of defensive guys in the portal with upside. Maybe they're not culture fits? Maybe they don't want to come here? Or maybe we're just not focusing enough attention on improving the defense? I don't know what is true. But I do know there are defensive players in the portal that could make us better.

Many of these portal players are running from something. Once in the portal, coaches call their former coaches. They find out why the player transferred. Some transfers are culture killers. We have built a great culture and I am sure our staff is trying to recruit to the culture.

Some talented portal players have a track record of immaturity and laziness. I am sure our staff is doing their best to weed out the prospects.

I don't think we're going to take any DBs. VQ and 247 crews have both said repeatedly that the staff seems to like the guys that they have already, and the youngsters coming in. They'll have more options at safety, which will let the natural corners play corner.

A) They aren't that good.
B) They aren't a good fit.
C) They are asking for too much ($ or instant start).
D) The player(s) we would lose would not make it a net positive.
E) Some/All of the above

I said the same thing last year, the Spring portal will not have the same talent level as the current opening. Spring will mostly be guys who couldn't win the job so decide to leave. Now is when you have talented guys looking to step up. They want to be on their new team and go through Spring practice. Go back and look at last year and you will see this is what happened. There are some talented guys out there so I'm not sure where people are getting this idea there is not. I see plenty of upgrades on defense.

lol I don't think he was bent out of shape. He was just telling his concerns on a message board. Its what we do.
