I said the same thing last year, the Spring portal will not have the same talent level as the current opening. Spring will mostly be guys who couldn't win the job so decide to leave. Now is when you have talented guys looking to step up. They want to be on their new team and go through Spring practice. Go back and look at last year and you will see this is what happened. There are some talented guys out there so I'm not sure where people are getting this idea there is not. I see plenty of upgrades on defense.
you did, and to your credit you were right

I think you can find starters now
Depth after bowl/before spring
Scraps after spring

I agree but I also think that on the defensive side of the ball for some odd reason they are satisfied with all but just a few spots. I go back to what CJH said when he first got here, as long as a defense can stop splash plays and long sustain drives that's what he is comfortable with. (Not those exact words but..) I honestly think they have some guys they believe can play and they are sticking with it except for maybe a spot or two. They see them everyday in practice and I don't so who knows.
That type of defense will bite you in the ass more times than not.

I don't think we're going to take any DBs. VQ and 247 crews have both said repeatedly that the staff seems to like the guys that they have already, and the youngsters coming in. They'll have more options at safety, which will let the natural corners play corner.
So, we have free rein to criticize Banks and Martinez next year and "they just don't have talent" is no longer a valid excuse.

Seriously, it's like they didn't see how poorly the secondary played this year. We need more than just the incoming freshmen.

Kyle Morlock is a more realistic option for Tennessee right now at tight end. He’s supposed to be visiting Tennessee later this week — I believe this weekend. Florida State hosted him over the weekend, and he’s also visiting Auburn and Illinois.
247

FSU winning the SC TE helps us here, as others have mentioned

I agree. I wish we could land a veteran safety and a talented, pure corner. Hell, even just two very athletic safeties like LSU always seems to have would improve this defense significantly, I would think. I don't know if they're playing locker room politics, of if the portal doesn't have the DBs they were hoping, but VQ and 247 got their very similar-sounding stances from somewhere...

A) They aren't that good.
B) They aren't a good fit.
C) They are asking for too much ($ or instant start).
D) The player(s) we would lose would not make it a net positive.
E) Some/All of the above
F) Heupel is focused on his offense and ignoring the defense.

No one wants to consider that. I love Coach Heupel. I love his offense. But offense cannot be our sole focus. We have to improve our defense. And it's like many of you are forgetting that while lamenting that defense this year, the constant excuse was "we just don't have the talent yet". There are some talented guys in the portal. Could there be other reasons we're not pursuing them? Absolutely. But why aren't we pursuing ANY of them? And I'm talking defense, not offense.

As far as I know they're still looking for an edge and looking for corner. I just don't think it's going to be the overhaul in the secondary that we were hoping for.

Here's the thing, I think you can still find starters after the bowls, but it's a lot less likely in the Spring. I do think there are some kids holding on to go to their bowl games. I have no idea how many, but some. Players get lots of swag at bowl games. It's a fun time. So some will enjoy it and then jump in after their bowl.

I mean, I also would like to land some portal guys, but there very clearly seems to be a reason why we aren’t being aggressive and looking to upgrade the defense after an abysmal year in the secondary. Maybe the staff doesn’t see any real upgrades out there.

They say that these staffs are well aware of who is INTENDING to enter the portal as well. You never know, we might be holding onto some information about a guy(s) that we are waiting on (and possibly already "talking" to) (tampering warning, watch out!!).

One corner and one safety could totally flip this secondary. You don't have to replace everyone, you just have to have a couple of game changers.

I think this is likely with what has been hinted at by some posters.

JMO, but I think we need 1 CB, 1 S, 1 LB, and 1 Edge guy, but they have to be impact guys. I also think we need another DL for the rotation. Adding more for improved depth would be great, but we probably don't have those spots. But with Banks gone, I think an impact LB is probably the single most important team need.

At some point we will have to play our young guys. We need to make sure we continue to develop them as several could see the field next year. Also, moving guys back to their natural position should help with development and growth with our current roster especially in the secondary.
