Kelly was a 3-Star recruit for the Bulldogs in the 2019 class out of local Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial. He was recruited late by Fresno State as a flip from his previous commitment to San Jose State.
Kelly redshirted in 2019, then immediately saw four starts in six games for the Bulldogs as a redshirt freshman in 2020. He broke out in his sophomore season in 2021 with nine starts, catching 52 passes for 778 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kelly entered the 2022 season as a starter, but suffered an injury in the Bulldogs’ third game of the season.
In all, Kelly had 17 starts with 87 catches for 1,305 yards and 4 touchdowns. He played in 26 games over four years.
With 2019 counting as a redshirt season and the 2020 COVID-19 eligibility waiver, Kelly still has two more seasons of eligibility to use.
I find it interesting that they call the former coaches. I mean, they might get a straight answer and they might not. Not sure that Saban would tell Heup, "yeah, that dude could help you."Many of these portal players are running from something. Once in the portal, coaches call their former coaches. They find out why the player transferred. Some transfers are culture killers. We have built a great culture and I am sure our staff is trying to recruit to the culture.
Some talented portal players have a track record of immaturity and laziness. I am sure our staff is doing their best to weed out the prospects.
