Following the SECs decision to protect permanent cross-divisional rivalries on Sunday, Tennessee football coach Butch Jones praised the move on Monday. Despite the fact that his Volunteer squad will face West Division behemoth Alabama on an annual basis. (You listening, Les Miles?)
Absolutely (I was fighting to preserve it), because its a part of our football program and the great tradition we have here. I think the Alabama/Tennessee rivalry is one of the best rivalries in the country, and I think its the best rivalry in the Southeastern Conference. To be able to maintain that rivalry is something that we are very excited about.
Kudos to Jones for not backing down from a fight, even if hes currently having to battle a bully from a higher weight class.
As for his statement that he believes the Tide/Vols rivalry to be the best in the SEC, well, were sure many would argue with that claim based in large part to the current dominance of Alabama. But The Third Saturday In October has always been a streaky series. Bama has won seven in a row. Before that Tennessee had taken 10 of 12 from the Crimson Tide, including its own seven-game win streak from 1995 through 2001. Alabama holds the all-time advantage in the 95 game series 50-38-7.
Perhaps most importantly, the Alabama/Tennessee game matches the two squads whove won the most conference championships all-time. The Tide own 23 titles. The Vols have captured 13. The two schools are also the SECs only members in the 800 victory club.
So is Jones correct in stating that UA/UT is the SECs best rivalry? Based on current results, no. But based on history and tradition? Absolutely. Some rivalries are more heated (Alabama/Auburn) and some have been more evenly matched (Auburn leads Georgia 55-54-8 after 117 meetings), but this is a matchup of the SECs top two programs in terms of all-time titles, all-time wins and all-time winning percentage.
College football is about tradition. Especially in the South. And when it comes to a tradition of winning, Alabama and Tennessee have it.
