Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Side note: What's the point of having an off topic thread if we are gonna talk about
race relations
on the football thread? We best move this convo before Freak deletes the off topic thread. THAT would be a tragedy.

Speaking of relations, in my lifetime I've had "relations" with white women, black women, latino women, and asian women. I'm not really prejudice in that way and I try not to be a sexist but Sterling had a woman that was both latino and black. Right? That's like 2 in 1. I don't understand him. It's like technology. Cultural convergence. He's on the cutting edge and can't appreciate how fortunate he is. That really is the part of this saga that is hard for me to understand. I'm not kidding. I guess she's available now, huh? Wanna record me baby? I guess you'd probably have to be a billionaire to get her though. Oh well.

Yes, that is the part I do not understand. He did not want her to be with blacks in pictures, but she is like half African-American? This is beyond my comprehension. If I did not like African-Americans then I certainly would not be going to ballgames with someone that was half black or sleeping with them. By the way, I'm not racist. In fact it about killed me when I was a kid and some of my friends were sleeping over so we could get an early start at some serious basketball competition, and my parents would not let a friend of mine spend the night due to his color. ( What would the neighbors think? ) That we were smart sensible people maybe.

The off topic thread got off topic yesterday, so I suppose a few folks decided to bring the convo here.

We've already talked about this, right?
Following the SEC’s decision to protect permanent cross-divisional rivalries on Sunday, Tennessee football coach Butch Jones praised the move on Monday. Despite the fact that his Volunteer squad will face West Division behemoth Alabama on an annual basis. (You listening, Les Miles?)

“Absolutely (I was fighting to preserve it), because it’s a part of our football program and the great tradition we have here. I think the Alabama/Tennessee rivalry is one of the best rivalries in the country, and I think it’s the best rivalry in the Southeastern Conference. To be able to maintain that rivalry is something that we are very excited about.”

Kudos to Jones for not backing down from a fight, even if he’s currently having to battle a bully from a higher weight class.

As for his statement that he believes the Tide/Vols rivalry to be the best in the SEC, well, we’re sure many would argue with that claim based in large part to the current dominance of Alabama. But The Third Saturday In October has always been a streaky series. Bama has won seven in a row. Before that Tennessee had taken 10 of 12 from the Crimson Tide, including its own seven-game win streak from 1995 through 2001. Alabama holds the all-time advantage in the 95 game series 50-38-7.

Perhaps most importantly, the Alabama/Tennessee game matches the two squads who’ve won the most conference championships all-time. The Tide own 23 titles. The Vols have captured 13. The two schools are also the SEC’s only members in the 800 victory club.

So is Jones correct in stating that UA/UT is the SEC’s best rivalry? Based on current results, no. But based on history and tradition? Absolutely. Some rivalries are more heated (Alabama/Auburn) and some have been more evenly matched (Auburn leads Georgia 55-54-8 after 117 meetings), but this is a matchup of the SEC’s top two programs in terms of all-time titles, all-time wins and all-time winning percentage.

College football is about tradition. Especially in the South. And when it comes to a tradition of winning, Alabama and Tennessee have it.

Well, I was trying.

I swear I'm not making this up. On Sunday morning in 1982 at church they announced to the congregation during the announcements at the beginning of service that we'd broke the Bama streak. Bama was ranked #2 and we were unranked. The church cheered. Whats more remarkable is that we were in Boston. I was a kid fresh out of the Navy and some of my friends had gone to Boston for school and mission work. Anyway, I again absolutely expect a lot of celebrations all over the country when we break their streak this time. Will it be this year? Stranger things have happened. We weren't expecting it in 1982. The Bear retired after that year rather than face what was to come. Just know that the party lasts for weeks. :)

Wait, what?

There is a ‘wow’ factor everywhere you turn in the facility. Tennessee director of football operations Chris Spognardi, an extremely sharp individual who has worked alongside Butch Jones for the last seven years, said that Jones never stops thinking about facility enhancements that appeal to high school recruits. Even more importantly, he wants the UT football facility to be different. I agree: You can’t just do what everyone else is doing and try to do a little bit better. That’s wasting time. The latest project is coming this summer when a “Rockefeller Center” type of media center is constructed inside the Tennessee football facility.

Ah, I got ya. For some reason I didn't connect the dots and in my mid-morning lull from getting up at 4am, took that literally.

But yeah, the graphics people in that building are out of control (and I mean that in the best of ways).

The NFL Displays (particularly the wall with the helmets) are outstanding.

If yall have CSS. The Vandy spring game is on. Webb (RB) looks pretty decent so far. This defense looks like their getting pushed around quite easily
