Last season was a disappointment but once I went back and rewatched a few games, and then rewatched some old games from the height Fulmer era, I realized just how historically bad and unathletic our roster was last year. And we had some critical injuries to boot. Hard to pin that on CBJ IMO.
We should have beat Vandy and we had no business beating USCe so last year was a wash to me.
If you want an eye-opener, watch pretty much any game from about 1991-1992 until 2005, and then compare those team's athleticism and speed against what we conditioned ourselves to be normal.
By no means am I trying to belittle anyone--honestly--but a certain DL who just quit the team (he did quit, right?) would have never been offered a scholarship, IMO, during our heyday.
I'm seriously trying rid myself from using the following two words but:
Derek Dooley is to the University of Tennessee as chronic methamphetamine use is to teeth.
We were dismantled from the inside-out. When your football program is commonly and consistently described as a "dumpster fire"....that's...not good.
What Butch is doing, from both a cultural and recruiting standpoint, is reviving a program that had not only hit rock bottom, but thought it had done so multiple times, only to find out there were several more levels to which it could sink. He doesn't have to win big, he just has to win and go to a bowl game. A winning season would purge a lot of bad memories and bad juju and provide enough momentum for 2015 to REALLY start something special.
Long post is long...sorry for all the words.
