As a five-star running back who signed with the home-state school, expectations were always going to be high for Hurd, but the buzz has only increased since he arrived in Knoxville this past January. Head coach Butch Jones has done nothing to temper the expectations heaped on his highly-touted back, offering "Jalen Hurd has been consistent everyday," over the weekend and suggesting Hurd can handle those expectations. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Hurd is definitely a unique prospect at his position. Height is often an obstacle for running backs to overcome, but Hurd runs with great pad level and he is more than a power back, showing plenty of shake and speed to be effective on the edge. Senior Marlin Lane is expected to be listed as the starter throughout the season for the Volunteers, but do not be surprised if Hurd logs as many touches as Lane by season's end. -- Josh Helmholdt, Midwest recruiting analyst
Hurd is a big, upright running back with excellent quickness, good shake and the ability to bounce off tackles. Coming off a few injuries, there will be some question about his durability, but the Vols need help at running back and need a big play guy and Hurd fits the mold. One of the biggest in-state recruits Tennessee has landed in the last few years, you can bet Hurd will get his chances early. -- Farrell.
