Interesting take from Butch. He implied that some of the physicality issues relate to the fact that some players have had to play immediately and, as such, miss out on the strength and growth that would normally take place during a redshirt year. Uses Chance Hall as an example.

Yep, this is why they didn't let freshmen play in the old days. And also why some coaches will take losses early in their tenure rather than play true freshmen. Boys need to grow to men to survive in this league.

All this disagreement just underscores the division in the fanbase and the program. Some people think 8-4 and a bowl is a successful season; some consider it a failure. And both sides lash out at the other for having a different mindset.

Big picture, UT no longer has an identity. The past decade has obfuscated who we are and what we expect. Do we expect to compete for championships every year and are disappointed when we fail... or are we satisfied with with beating a rival or two and getting to a bowl game? Are we a top-tier program or a mid-tier program? Because what is acceptable for one is unacceptable for the other and there will be no agreement until everybody buys into the same standards and expects the same results.

The thing is, there is a middle group that is trying to push for reason. This group says that 8-4 with the team we started the season with is unacceptable. This group says yes we looked bad on defense and really didn't play up to the teams capability all year. This group also recognizes that there are a lot of possible reasons for why things didn't go our way this year. However, if we can't stick with a coaching staff long enough for them to truly make a run then we will forever be mired in mediocrity. This year should have ended very differently but we got knocked on our butts. Butch had us going well enough to be hyped as hell going into this season so why all of the sudden is he Dooley level. I believe in lofty expectations but I also am able to objectively look at why those expectations might not be met. I will continue to support this team no matter who coaches or plays on Saturdays. Offer criticisms but make them constructive and not just emotional off the cuff "Fahr ERRBODY" criticisms.

Also, this is directed at you LA Vol. Just a general rant.

I agree with Bruin and Ziti here. Too many folks ITT making mountains out of molehills.

The S&C position is a head scratcher.

The biggest thing I took away from today's presser was Butch's renewed urgency in recruiting. I'll bet we finish really, really strong.

From today, there are three or four things that Butch controls that will dictate whether he can take the program to the next level:

1. Repair the defense and play guns blazing in the bowl game. Play a complete game and leave no doubt against Nebraska.
2. Make the difficult and necessary staff changes.
3. Finish extremely well in recruiting (top 10-12)
4. Have the most competitive spring and QB competition imaginable.

5. Fix the S&C program immediately and have winter workouts separate the men from the boys.

I can honestly say that I don't think I've seen the FIRST person say that 8-4 and a bowl game this year has been a successful season. Not one.

No one thinks it's acceptable, just that reasonable fans try to move on and see what we do to fix it. That's the key now. What moves are made to address the failure.

Speaking of moves, anyone think they start SOON since the championship games are over?

Yes, very soon.

You guys act like what comes from the press conferences are pure facts haha. Sure maybe Lewis meant what he said but maybe he has respect for Butch and just says what his coach says, and maybe he truly thinks it's disappointing

Totes jelly here.

So I had a dream last night that today the Vols exploded with 5 star commitments. Trey, Higgins, and Okudah. Isn't gonna happen the way I dreamt it but hopefully at least one will happen.

I realize this may be the wrong forum for this, but I want the season to explode with WINS; signing 5 Stars is a means to an end, but the rating system is somewhat window dressing. The Head Coach is responsible for the bottom line and that is to win. Losing to South Carolina and Vanderbilt won't cut it in any year. I couldn't care less how many stars a kid has if Butch thinks the kid can play at a high level, great. Butch is responsible for whatever happens. Sign the right kids, have great coaches to coach them up and then WIN doggone it!

Rant over.

Just going to leave this here

The last of the Dooley kids will be gone. This is the last purge of a loser mentality we need. Lewis has been through a lot, would love to represent the school as he got the chance to. He should be proud of the effort he gave in getting us pointed in the right direction.

Having said that, we need kids who will never be satisfied with losing. Never expect a loss, never get complacent.

This right here is what leaves this fan base in such an odd spot. I have no doubt that we ALL desire to be a top-tier program and long to compete for championships every year. The problem is, those that make the decisions and those big donors that shell out millions for coaches (and their buyouts) have shown a history of not being willing to shell out the kind of money to get top-tiered coaches, as the top-tiered programs have done. Basically, we can wish in one hand and S*^@ in the other and then see which fills up first.

I will root for my Vols always, but I must admit it is disheartening knowing that unless something major changes in the administration's and boosters' thought processes, we will field good teams most years and a great team every once in a while. Competing for those championships every year like the Bama's of the world...it just isn't going to happen.

...and I'm as much a posivol as one can probably find...

@wesrucker247:FWIW, it’s pretty obviously Butch is gonna make some staff changes, but he's right to not announce any of that yet. I agree with him there.

Here is Football Scoop's reply

@FootballScoop: The coaching community is already aware of a couple of changes coming. Just hard to say it when the guys are still working.

I think this talk about not having a strength coach is way overblown.

1. The guy was here until well into the spring. Damage was done prior to his departure.
2. He was the strength coach for all sports, not just football.
3. He wasn't the one working with the team on a daily basis. The guy that did that is still here.
4. There was only 2-3 months that we were without his services before fall camp when the workout schedule changes drastically.
5. They don't do much lifting during the season.
6. It would have been harder to get a quality replacement at the time of his departure. Both college and NFL guys are heavily into their routines so it would have been difficult to pull someone at that time of the year. Better to wait till this time and you get your pick depending on how much you want to spend.

Oh really? They didn't "want" to lose to Vanderbilt and South Carolina? Really changes my view. Butch is definitely the guy.

They are ok with the final result. 8-4 with a bum bowl game after having the east in a stranglehold and the sugar bowl on lock is acceptable to them. Loser mentality.

Yeah, it is cool to bust on players who want to be positive and not dwell on the negative. Ok, I'm sure you are a lot of fun to be around.
