Ya but Kelly is not proven to be as good as Kamara and hasn't proven he can handle the #1 workload all season, OL wasn't great in pass pro and struggled overall at times, and you're absolutely guessing that our QBs "won't be a bust." QB alone is reason enough to doubt that our offensive production will be worse. Look at all the highly rated QBs Bama has had that didn't pan out. We are not immune to that either. I predict we'll be fine, but you can't fault writers for doubting.

Kamara didn't handle the #1 workload ALL SEASON, and this time last year was "not proven to be as good as Kamara". This doesn't dispute your point of Kelly be relatively unproven, but he was similarly as productive as Kamara's first season. Fun of the unknown. :)

Here are today’s observations…

After debuting the ‘Circle of Life’ drill on Tuesday, Butch Jones broke it out again to start Friday’s practice, but this time, Tennessee’s coach didn't announce the participants. The drill lasted all of two reps before the whistle blew and the team sprinted into 1-on-1’s on the goal line. While the team basically blocked the media’s viewing angle, we were able to see some matchups.

Jauan Jennings beat Justin Martin on a fade route (pass via Quinten Dormady)
Marquez Callaway schooled Shaq Wiggins on a quick slant (pass from Jarrett Guarantano)
Latrell Williams beat Cheyenne Labruzza on a double-move (pass via Will McBride)
Elsewhere, Rashaan Gaulden had a nice PBU on a slant, Guaratano had a bad overthrow on a fade to Jacquez Jones and Marquill Osbourne broke up a fade pass intended for Jeff George.

LB BOYS BACK

Injured linebackers Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Daniel Bituli — both limited by minor knee injuries to start camp — were at practice in pads as full participants. Also, defensive tackle Shy Tuttle was in full-pads and did some limited work during the viewing periods.

RED ZONE ROUTE TREE

For the first time in fall camp, we got to see Tennessee run through its full pass-skeleton drill down in the red zone. It wasn't the best period for the quarterbacks or the receivers, though.

At times, everyone was on point — with Dormady and Guarantano particularly throwing some perfect wheel-route passes to tight ends Ethan Wolf, Jakob Johnson and Eli Wolf.

But other times, both guys struggled with accuracy — particularly on a few slants and skinny posts. Mike Canales continued to repeat his favorite mantra “pinpoint accuracy” during the session. It was the first time all camp we've really ever seen several balls hit the turf.

Meanwhile, it wasn't just an off day for the two quarterbacks. Jennings dropped two balls, as did freshman Joshua Palmer. Tyler Byrd, working on the outside, got a long talking to from Butch Jones about his route depth. Several wideouts slipped out of their breaks during routes, too.

Josh Smith and Brandon Johnson both had great periods, though, with Smith seeming to grab a tighter hold on the starting slot spot.

THIS & THAT
Quart’e Sapp and Emmanuel Mosley remained in green, non-contact jerseys.

The quarterback-center exchange flipped again, with Dormady snapping with Coleman Thomas and Jashon Robertson working with Guarantano. During OL work Friday, Robertson got a lot of action at right guard, with Thomas at center and Jack Jones at left guard.

During special teams drills, they worked on PAT block, PAT kick and kickoff return. The main returners were Evan Berry, Tyler Byrd, Nigel Warrior and Ty Chandler.

The offensive line worked on combo-blocks for a lengthy period, while the secondary — split between safeties and corners — did various ball-tracking, press-coverage drills.

Former Vol J.J. McCleskey was in town and watched practice after being inducted in the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday evening. Former defensive end Chris Walker was also in town for practice.

You're a smart dude BB and your opinion is respected by most people on the board. I just don't understand the venom behind the Dormady posts. You always take a strong stand when it comes to recruits but there's something different about this QB battle and your dislike of Dormady.

I love when he goes at Gator fans.

Evan Berry back fielding kicks/Punts......boy that makes me happy. Gamechanger.

AND punts? Indeed. That's a gamechange in coaching philosophy also. Never bought the explanation on why he couldn't do both. :eek:hmy:

I just think to characterize Josh Dobbs as "inaccurate" is inaccurate.

I do too. Inaccuracy doesn't lead to the completion percentage he posted. Nor does it lead to best deep ball completion percentage in the draft.

Inaccurate passers have a more consistent targeting and placement problem that often has to do with mechanical or arm strength problems. Dobbs bad passes almost always had to do with footwork, protection, and the occasional just not being locked in (sorta like when a pitcher or basketball player just isn't in the zone and can't make anything work - they're not suddenly bad pitchers or shooters) but again the vast majority of them were directly tied to footwork and given how he had to always be ready to scramble to safety that's not terribly surprising.

A year's work behind a good OL and only having to worry about the occasional designed run instead of always having to be ready to run even when you're trying to throw will do wonders for him, imo.

If QD is taking all the "first team" snaps this early in fall camp there is no QB controversy

I keep reading and can't find that but could be completely missing it. Where'd you get that he's taking all the 1st team snaps?

That's the thing, they are inconsistent with who they doubt and who they don't. Right or wrong they are predicting a big drop off for us but saying fla, who lost more than we did, will be dominant in D. Inconsistent
