Man to man with 2 deep safeties would have worked perfect. Cover 4 would have worked. Butch says we were to injured to be in dime, but it wasn't even the formation that cost us the play, it was the actual call.
Peneiro has an amazing leg, he's kicked it 81 yards in practice, last year he made a 55 yarder with plenty of room to spare. Mac probably would have kicked it if they got to the 50/45. So they really only needed 15/20 yards to attempt it.
Cover two was probably the worst thing you can call in that situation. Back the CB's up about 10 yards, back safeties up about 30 yards. Keep everything in front. They only had 1 play before attempting a FG. Worse case scenario should have been a 15 yard catch and they either go for an actual Hail Mary or they attempt a 65 Yard FG.
In that situation I'm not convinced that the best strategy isn't just telling your DBs to tackle the WRs to the ground once the ball is snapped.
They get 5 yards and a first down, but then you've forced their hand on the last play of the game.
