Yeah I’m not sure I buy the coaching turmoil crap.
I think it's player turmoil. Which is the responsibility of the staff, I get that. The staff needs to cultivate leaders. But I think the players have drawn lines between themselves. I don't care if you Vince Lombardi, if a player doesn't trust or want to win for ghee guy next to him it's an up hill battle.

And this has the signs of that. Inconsistent and unexplainable results. I.e. we play as a team occasionally (Auburn and Kentucky wins last year) but most of the time it's a soup sandwich (USCjr loss, Charlotte game, Vandy game, GA St. game).

I really think it's a culture between players and the few that care can't make up for it.

I posted this elsewhere but you know the worst part about today was? I had to sleep through most of the game because I work at night. I woke up around 5:20 and when I rolled over and pulled up the score, you know what I felt? Not anger or irritation or sadness. Apathy. I just didn't care. In fact, I half expected it because deep down, I know that following this team is just going to be one kick in the nuts after the other. So I just got out of bed and went on with my business. That is where we're at (or at least I am at) as followers of one of the proudest, most storied programs in the country. Seeing us losing 28-23 to Georgia State and just not being able to give a ****
It was 38-30. We lost to GA St. And the score was 38-30.

The thing I think is true about the coaching stuff is that Chaney has been coaching the OL and hasn't been gracious about it. Don't blame him one bit. And I think Chaney and Tee were beyond frustrated today, which is exactly what they should be. But Tee is very excited to be back at UT and he's not looking to leave. He's looking to stop the humiliation and drag the program out of the gutter, which I'm sure he takes more personally than others on staff.

Feel your pain. I stopped watching in the 3rd cause I expected us to lose. Deep down i accepted it.

The O-line shuffling was excessive and extremely detrimental. Everyone who started has been here since December at least - no excuse for not having that unit fully installed. Chaney’s gotta be missing goofy Pittman.

Except apparently it is because we also bring in dudes like Shoop, Tee Martin, and this entire staff full of highly regarded recruiters and coaches and to a man, they just magically become garbage. Then when they leave, they are miraculously good again. Our head coaches have been doo doo but our coordinators haven't and yet, here we are. Again.

It just has this air of inevitability at this point and that (to me) is by far the most frustrating part about all this. It feels like no matter how much money we spend, what changes we make, who we bring in, or what we do we are just stuck in this endless cycle of ineptitude that for whatever reason, we are incapable of breaking out of. I have NEVER been so frustrated about sports in my entire life.

The most frustrating part for me was I wasn’t even mad after we lost. The last 10+ years has conditioned me to accept losing and become apathetic. It’s to the point where you just wait for it to happen. I guess I forgot what it feels like to compete for championships or expect to win.

Chaney coaching OL and not Friend???

Did it on defense, too-- players subbing in and out, unsure where to go or how to line up. And today was simple packages. Camp's over. Today wasn't a scrimmage-- it just looked like one.

Great way to start my senior year. It has been a hard four years and I was hoping this would be a good one to cap it off. I'm so jealous of those that got to live through the 90s, because of my time around the program I cannot even fathom that somehow we would be the best. Apathy has definitely set in for most VOLS fans my age, because we've never seen much good. It's hard to root hard and passionately when you've heard stories about how good we were and and we get this. At least lose to someone better than Georgia State for Gods sake so I don't have to get as drunk to drown my sorrows! I guess today I'm not only embarrassed as a student of the university but also as a born and raised Tennessean. I just wish these people that are meant to represent our state would take as much pride in it as I do. The game-plan and effort was abysmal today and I hope that the coaches and players are embarrassed. I hope somebody on this team gets some balls and leads this team because at this point I don't think it's going to be our QB or our HC. Hey but at least I've got my Titans to look forward to .

We're still beating Florida BTW

So is there an issue between Chaney and Pruitt?

I asked new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney, who was adamant you cannot hide a deficient offensive line, how he plans to manage such a dilemma.

“Everybody has a different opinion on that,” he said, chuckling. “My history says defensive coordinators and defensive head coaches think you can move those pieces around a lot. The day before the game, ‘Hey, he can go to guard, he can go to tackle.’ Then there are those people who have worked with the offensive line who try to get it in place way too soon, so I’ve always mixed it trying to figure out the harmony there.

“I think as soon as you can find your five best players, you try to put them in the positions you need them at. It’s like anything else, but you also don’t want to do it so early you’re losing competition, too. We want to let this thing play out and see who the best players are. I’m real interested about that, it’ll be good to see.”

Taking my leave from football. My life just got REAL serious at a surprising time, given today’s outcome. @butchna, I’ll message you on here before the SC game, my cousin already bought me a ticket so I can’t say no. Maybe we can meet up. @nicksjuzunk praying for you, the family, and everyone you impact, to continue being a light in dark places brother. 👊
Be well friend

Old tired excuse? I will ask you the same question I always ask you that you never answer. Other than Barnett name some other lineman Butch put in the league. I mean in being here 5+ years surely he put quite a few offensive or defensive lineman in the NFL. Keep in mind based on the NFL draft offensive and defensive lineman are wayyyyyyy more important than wide receivers and running backs.

I will hang up and listen.

Why are you asking me a question you can google the answer to yourself? Terrible troll job, man. Better luck next week!

Phil already hired the next head coach...

Might not be after this season, but don’t be surprised if Jim Chaney is the HC in the next 2-3 years. My conspiracy theory

Still in shock, so this may be a dumb question. Have we had a worse loss in program history?

I've been skeptical of Pruitt, but my definition of skeptical was he'll never win the SEC or he's too green to learn on the job in the SEC or he'll be a perennial 8-4 type coach and have this program in a spot to hire a championship coach in 5 years. Never ever dreamed he couldn't have a team ready for GA State.

Still, he's a sophomore coach in the toughest conference. This could be a low point in a decent future career, but his seat rose in temperature, even if it's just a little.
I’m no historian, but I cannot recall a worse loss. Wyoming was awful, but there were circumstances... and I still think this is worse even if we count it the same

Anybody who thought this was a 5-7 team is at 4-8 or 3-9 now. Nobody predicted a L here. The Vols were favored by 25 points against a team that had never beaten a P5 team. And they lost by 8 points-- and it could've been even uglier.

Worst case scenario outside of key injuries today.

back to back years we come out with no energy in game number 1. How?

Idk man...truly at a “believe it when I see it” level with Pruitt. Dooley and Butch had my trust longer than this.
Last year was a top 10 team. This year a bottom 10 team. I can look past one, but Year 2 to GS?
