Honestly I believe that rankings don't matter as long as you recruit your needs I feel kiffin did a horrible job recruiting needs but dooley has done a great job I believe people need to get over rankings and look at the holes dooley is filling

I am concerned about the running back position. Can Tom Smith be the answer, or does Coach Dooley need to get someone else as well?

Well, no one can really know for sure about RB situation. I wouldnt wory too much. Oku, Williams, and Neal are all still young and we do get Poole back next year. I'd say Dooley will push for a stud RB next class. JMO

He did pretty well with JJ, MHughes, MWalls, TBray, CMiller, JSmith, and JJames. Of course had flops but most wouldn't have flopped had he stayed.

Although he didn't enroll until January of '09 (academic/eligibility issues), MHughes originally signed under Fulmer's watch, IIRC....

Filling needs is important but those needs need to be filled with quality talent. So in a way rankings kind of matter even when filling needs. For example if our competition is filling needs with top 10 classes and we're filling needs with a class ranked in the 20s or 30s then there will be a pretty big talent gap there. Mississippi State fills talent with a class ranked in the 20s and Bama fills their needs with a class ranked in the top 10. So it makes sense that if Bama is well coached and comes to play they would beat MSU almost every time. I think Dooley is doing a great job of filling needs with quality players and I think a lot of people will be surprised how well Dooley closes this class out.

When your primary needs is linemen, your overall rankings will be lower. It is easier to get a 4 or 5 star runningback or receiver than five 4 and 5 star OL & DL which drives the rankings down.
Games are won in the trenches, therefore get me some big uglies where are star players can produce.
In summation, we need linemen, juco and freshmen.

I agree games are won in the trenches. I think good recruiting teams can fill needs on both lines and still have a pretty decently ranked class. I think UT is a good example of this year, we're meeting ours needs on the lines and we'll still probably end up in the top 15. I'm just saying for example that if we're filling needs on the OL and DL with a class ranked in the 30s then fans have a reason to worry. Thankfully we don't have to worry.

WE need some big mean DT's. We are not going to get a great pass rush until our DT's are actual DT's and not moved DE's. On offense we just need depth and one (give it to me JJ) DYNOMITE OL who we can run the bowl behind over and over again.

the want another speed running back but might run out of room

I don't understand this... It seems like we are more in need of a bruiser, we don't really have a true big back. I'm not sure which category neal falls into, but oku is a speed back and williams has not shown that he can run since surgery. Just my thought, but I trust the coaches. Smith and young are small too.*

Poole, Neal, & Smith are the type of backs that you can give the ball to 20-30 times a game. We need a back that has serious speed so we can get him out in the flats on swing passes & screens ect... We need a speed back to offset Poole, Neal, & Smith.

Tom Smith is 200 lbs. Young is 165 lbs according to Scout. A little confused about that comparison. Different running styles between the two.
From Corey Long of ESPN about Tom:
At 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, he fits the mold of physical Tennessee running backs that run low to the ground.

So I guess we recruited devrin strictly as a return specialist? And that makes me scratch my head as to why we wanted oku to bulk up so much. Seems like that's who he was about 25 pounds ago.
