I just finished watching "The Express" a biopic of Ernie Davis.

I wonder if Tennessee tried to recruit Jim Brown or Ernie Davis or Floyd Little who all played at Syracuse.

One of the schools that recruited Larry Csonka was Vanderbilt according to Wikipedia. Csonka also played at Syracuse.

Thanks for any information.

No. TN's first black football player was Lester McClain and he was a sophomore in 1968 (freshmen were't yet eligible). Those three played several years earlier.

I've read that Albert Davis was supposed to have been the first. Never knew the story on why he didn't enroll.

If it was the game in OR, I was there as an 8(?) year old kid. Yup, he was in another league. I had heard that academics were an issue in regards to him attending UT; could have been just a rumor though.
That was the game. I haven't seen another person stand out like that in football. Ever.
A head taller than the OR players, and all muscle and speed.

I'm 68 now. Not sure of the year of the game. I believe UT was recruiting McClain and Davis that year.
