247 Recruiting Rankings

Two caveats...1) I am a newbie at recruiting so I know this has likely been answered 1000's of times but I cannot find it, and 2) this might be in the wrong forum so please move it if so.

247 has us ranked 12 out of 14 SEC teams in recruiting. This is based on "Points" that are somehow calculated. But when looking at "Avg" which is average ranking of each incoming player, I could argue there are about 8 or 9 teams grouped pretty much together versus Vandy at the bottom and 4 teams at the top (A&M, Bama, GA, LSU).

Question: for you recruiting gurus, I obviously care more about results on the field, but do you pay more attention to the AVG, the POINTS, or something else when you look at our class' future prospects of on the field results. Thanks.

why is this 12 out of 14 but we're ahead of a lot of those teams in the national rankings?

Here is the real answer OP:
someone polished their crystal ball, looked deeply into it and then asked the magic 8 ball if TN sucked this year in recruiting. The 8 ball answered "check back in 4 years when we actually know how these players performed"

no one knows, it is all just a guessing game and sure the 5* are pretty much a "lock" to be a good maybe great player but there are plenty of 3* who outperform and make the NFL. The NFL is full of 3* guys who just wanted it more. Give me the guy that wants it more.

Id rather win some championships than put a bunch of 3* in the league

Wins and losses. ( the something else in my case) I guess it's nice to worry about "how good/or highly ranked a kid is in Feb." but I just don't worry about him unless he isn't a winner in the fall. Got more things to think about or worry about in Feb. than "how good a kid is/will be later in the year."

The first thing I look at is if we are filling team needs. If we have 5 underclassmen rbs in the room and add 2 more, not much of a need. If we have 2 senior rbs, 2 juniors and a freshman, those 2 added rbs are more valuable.

Generally, I then lean to player average when comparing teams within 1-3 overall recruit numbers. This year we have 21 high school commits, so I compare with teams from 18-24 commits.

More than 3 spots in either direction and it becomes a little more about quantity. Depth becomes an issue. If we have 21, but Florida gets 30, even if our per player average is a little higher, I would expect their class to pan out better. My starter might be better, but I might not have a backup, where they have a less talented starter, but at least have a backup if the starter gets hurt, has a ‘cramp’, or becomes a murderer (which, at uf, is a possibility).

It’s hard to know as these are high school kids that we’ve never met, but character and hard work are two of the biggest keys in development of these athletes. A 5 star that only cares about NIL and TikTok followers won’t have the same impact on a program as a high 3 star that comes to compete and drives himself to be better. So, who knows how any of the rankings will turn out?

Lastly, the most important thing is to always remember that these recruiting profiles represent real kids with real dreams and real problems. Their value shouldn’t be only based on how much they entertain you as a Vol or not as a Vol.
